Wolverhampton-darlington

Hi everyone, this is my very 1st post on this site and i hope ive used the correct place to post this thread, please feel free to move the thread if needed.
I am travelling from Wolverhampton to darlington on Friday 21st May and returning on Tuesday the 25th....i have checked a couple of sites regarding ticket info and prices and have come up with the following trains that seem to be the cheapest :
Wolverhampton 0957 arrives Darlington 1313 @ £34.50 advance fare
Darlington 1054 arrives wolverhampton 1411 @ £22.00 advance fare

However i am free to travel on a slower route if there are any tickets/routes that are cheaper? I have noticed when ive read some of the threads on this awesome site that there seems to be certain stations that "splitting" may be possible.....my question is... can anyone come up with a cheaper ticket than ive found?

You could see if it is cheaper to get an Advance on CrossCountry to Manchester, and another Advance from Manchester to York on TPE, there is a chance of that being cheaper particularly for the outward journey.

Derby - Sheffield: Off-Peak Day Single (CDS) £8.40 [M-F not before 0900]
Sheffield - Darlington: Advance single route EC & Connections £11.00
Darlington - Attenborough: Advance single route EC & Connections £10.25
Attenborough - Long Eaton: Anytime Day Single (SDS) £1.90
Total £46.75

for this itinerary:

Friday 21 May
11:57 Wolverhampton - Birmingham New Street 12:17 London Midland.
12:30 Birmingham New Street - Sheffield 13:46 CrossCountry.
14:11 Sheffield - Doncaster 14:40 TransPennine Express
15:03 Doncaster - Darlington 16:01 East Coast

Tuesday 25 May
11:05 Darlington - Doncaster 12:00 East Coast
12:36 Doncaster - Grantham 13:14 East Coast

15:18 Nottingham - Attenborough 1527, Long Eaton 1536 - Derby 15:48 East Midlands Trains
then either
15:53 Derby - Birmingham New Street 16:27 CrossCountry.
16:49 Birmingham New Street - Wolverhampton 17:11 Virgin.

16:06 Derby - Birmingham New Street 16:54 CrossCountry.
17:08 Birmingham New Street - Wolverhampton 17:33 London Midland.

The Advance fares include an 11% online booking discount obtainable only at eastcoast.co.uk. To find these fares, first search in the normal way. This will reveal faster, more expensive journeys. Then choose Show slower routes, then Via East Coast & other TOC connecting services then Update. For the Darlington - Attenborough fare, you then also need to choose Amend search, then More options, then via Grantham then Search.

The Wolverhampton - Long Eaton SVR is valid for break of journey on both legs, so it is perfectly valid to use it for Wolverhampton - Derby on the outward leg and Long Eaton - Wolverhampton on the return leg.

Thanks John for the reply The route you have found especially the return journey is very tempting as it would involve travelling over lines and to stations ive never visited. Much appreciated

Hi Peter and thank you so much for your reply. I have booked the outward journey that you suggested, i did think about the earlier train ( change at Crewe which was £13 to Manchester) but decided to just use the through train and stay in bed a little longer lol.

You're welcome And I have to agree, the TPE route is quite scenic in parts. It's best done in the winter when it's snowing, which I had the pleasure of doing last January. It was amazing, and the trains were on time while the M62 had "accidents" and 2 hour delays.
