Wolverhampton - Aberdeen in February

Hi everyone

I am looking to travel to Aberdeen on the first weekend in February, arriving on the Friday and returning on the Sunday.

At the moment I have got the options down to the following, but wondered if anyone might be able to help me get it any cheaper (I can see that VT advances for Sun 8 Feb aren't available yet but I won't be able to book this until the 25th in any case)?

Outward: Thu 5 Feb
Wolverhampton - Crewe advance single £8.50
dep WVH 22:26 arr CRE 23:00
Crewe - Aberdeen seated sleeper advance £33.75 (Scotrail website discount)
dep CRE 23:56 arr ABD 07:34

Return: Sun 8 Feb
Aberdeen - Birmingham advance single £46.70
dep ABD 10:15 arr DEE 12:15 (bus)
dep DEE 12:21 arr EDI 13:42
dep EDI 13:55 arr BHM 18:28

the timing at Dundee seems very short coming off a replacement bus - I've never been to Dundee station so don't know how reasonable 6 minutes is, can anyone advise?

Returning to Birmingham instead of Wolverhampton isn't a problem for me, and daytime travelling on the Friday instead of overnight Thursday is also a possibility, but overnight Sunday isn't really.

If they will sell you an Advance with that connection in Dundee, and the bus is late, you are entitled to travel on a later train.

If you want a quicker (much quicker ie 8 hours ) journey try Flybe - 2 flights available from BHX at £40 on your outward date and 2 from ABZ at £39.66 on return date.

You then have to get from the airport to whether in Aberdeen you are going, that needs factoring into the price.

If he lives in Wolverhampton it's one train to BHI and onto the airport , the other end a bus direct into town from outside the Terminal Building. Even without discounts your talking a few quid at most.

More importantly he will effectively "gain a day" which is priceless

I note he's not going 1st Class so it precludes a cramped Vomiter in all likelihood !!!

BHI is not a problem it is within the zones on my season ticket. The other end sounds simple enough, and gaining a day is even better.

Methinks there is a perception that Air is going to be a lot more expensive than it often is.

The scenery, people-watching as you fly through stations, breaking journey for a cigarette and some cafe food halfway up the line, and most importantly, I feel ill when using aeroplanes.

I like the sound of that , unfortunately these silly English Stations don't let you smoke on the open platforms.

Incidentally both Aberdeen and Birmingham Airports have smoking facilities Airside

You don't have to piddle around with check-in when you go by train! And you don't end up screwed if you misplace your ID. Plus the train allows a lot more luggage to be carried at no extra cost

Well if you want to sit on a Train from Wick to London rather than flying that's your prerogative.

As long as you have "a day to spare" it won't be a problem

That might be true but with careful planning is easy to overcome.

Try a daytrip from Aberdeen to Birmingham on the Train. Your day is spent on trains not in the city
