Also worth noting (if you don't know this) that on Fri/Sat from 17:55** the Robin Hood line is *completely* dry - e.g. you are not even allowed to have an unopened bottle of wine as a gift for later etc. - and I believe (though I haven't seen it) that they do sometimes search bags on boarding!
(Just thinking it was possible you might fall foul of this).

Well worth noting. Though from experience (living in Whitwell* towards the northern end of the line) they use discretion quite a lot. I’ve travelled back having had a drink and carrying a bag and haven’t had it searched. I think they can likely use intuition. Like I say, definitely worth pointing out.

If you've got time to kill you could do:
Woking - Wimbledon -> Wimbledon - St Pancras -> St Pancras - Nottingham.

It would be a slow journey to St Pancras but a simple one.

Another set of options open up if you can contrive a lift for the first part of the journey - perhaps from someone at work?
eg to Reading - save the initial trip to/change at Basingstoke, or even somewhere like Watford. Via the latter you could go to Tamworth with the Trent Valley stoppers (is it LNW these days?) and get an EMT Cardiff - Nottingham service at the High Level station. Not sure if the connections work, however. Of if the EMT trains are not packed like sardines on a Friday evening.
