Newark Northgate to Grimsby Town.
The cheapest return fare I can find is
Off-Peak Return Any off-peak train. Return within 1 month for £36.50.
This seems excessive in view of the realtively short distance and journey duration.
Can any fares experts confirm that this actually is the cheapest return fare?

The Via Lincoln ticket is cheaper according to NRES (the direct services stop there) which is a CDR.

I see an off-peak day return from Newark North Gate-Grimsby Town route: via Lincoln at £14.10.

The reason I think you're seeing the £36.50 fare is that they are set by East Coast, and presumably allow travel via Doncaster and Scunthorpe, hence the higher price.

Thank you MattE2010.
Amazing thing just happened. I was on the East Coast site trying to book a £11.55 Advance fare KGX-GMB. As I finished choosing my service, and went to click BUY, I noticed it was greyed out. It reappeared a couple of minutes later - after my £11.55 bargain fare had changed, in the list of services, to £20.50

I think a whole book could be written listing the flows which should reasonably have SD and CD but don't

You have missed the Super Off Peak return, at £27.80 only 50p more than the single, valid out and return after 09.30. The Off Peak return might as well be the Anytime Return as it's valid after 04.00. (and see others' posts for the fact these are the via Doncaster fares.)
