196114/113 were both in New Street this afternoon. 114 worked in on the 1259 ex Shrewsbury and 113 ran empty after its 1305 ex Shrewsbury was cancelled due to “traction problems”. I didn’t see where 113 went, but I’d assume it ran to Tyseley, as it’s 1452 to Shrewsbury was also cancelled.

Any idea on the purpose of this? I know some are due to transfer for E-W rail, but I understood these would be 2-car units, not 4-car (which is 196/1 right)?

Does seem very odd, particularly with fewer 2 car 196/0s used with 196007, 009 and 010 not used now. Maybe it's just going for some work to be carried out rather than storage?

I took a trip to Tyseley yesterday, hoping to catch 196010, but a combination of brilliant sunshine and filthy windows meant I could only see a few numbers (incl 196113 - result!), although there were quite a few other 196s stabled in the depot yard.
I had a walk around the roadways near the depot, but that didn't yield any more results.
Is anyone able to confirm that 196010 is stabled in the depot yard, and visible from passing trains, please?

Railcam has 196112 on the allocation.

I have read on the 730 tread that work on the Bletchley Depot is not complete. As the 196s that are due to go to EWR were intended to be housed at Bletchley, I am wondering if this will delay their transfer.

I doubt it. Training will be starting soon at Tyseley and there will be no 196 running on EWR until the new year. Heavy maintenance on the 196s will still be carried out at Tyseley when EWR commences passenger service anyway.

I've seen reports about 196010's been withdrawn pending testing on EWR between Oxford and Bletchley, but I've not seen any reports of it actually leaving Tyseley. Does anyone know where is it currently, please? If at Tyseley, is it visible from passing trains?

It's off lease at Tyseley.

Availability of the 2 car 196/0s poor today as according to Part Time Spotter only 3 out today, 9 4 car 196/1s are out though so most diagrams covered.

Top n tail 37's have just taken 196010 through New St, completely caught me unawares! They came from the Derby end through platform 12 and off towards Kings Norton

I note that 196009 & 196010 have been "off lease" since 13/08/2024 or before. Not that I am sure what "off lease" means with these.
They were unused since July 2024.
To recap 196009 went to Long Marson 21/10/2024.

I do wonder if 196007 will follow them as I cannot see that it been used since 06/08/2024.
I am guessing that 196007 - 196012 are earmarked for East West Rail.

The gossip has been that 196007 - 196012 will be the units allocated to EWR. When Chiltern ran test trains over the Bicester-Bletchley EWR two weeks ago they used their own trains and their own drivers reportedly with drivers from several Chiltern depots. The move of the units to EWR will presumably be determined by the stage at which the newly recruited drivers have reached in their training.
