I saw a 196 on the Stourbridge Line when they were first tested so they must have been cleared. Also it was reported in the early days that one Worcester diagram would see 196s on the Stourbridge Line
Will be no booked work for 196’s on the Snow Hill Lines with the exception of ECS moves between Tyseley & Worcester/Leamington plus the late night Hereford-New St/New St-Worcester via Galton Jct.

Almost certainly will be. There are a very limited number of daily services between Worcester and Birmingham New St that run via Kidderminster (using Smethwick West Jct), so clearance will be required for these services even before diversions come into play (unless these services aren't being retained).
All Snow Hill Lines cleared for 196’s.

If one was to run from the middle road into the platform through the scissors as we call them, it would normally be ECS only for the depot. Only a 2 car would be able to do it & enter passenger service due to signal sighting & length. All services should be a 4 car off Worcester.

Only asking as the 0625 of WOS used to depart from 1B coming ECS off the middle road with the leading near side corner coming very close to the platform, not so bad when it was the 150 diagram but it looked as though she of the platform had been ground off to allow a 170 to clear it.

Not gone if P1 since it was booked for a 4 car (170/172). Comes off the shed via the Tunnel into p2

196004 "Sir Edward Elgar" was on the official 196 launch on the Birmingham to Hereford/Worcester route today. Many photos on the 196/730 group on Facebook. Interesting attached was a 196004 number plate like a name plate but for numbers instead. Anyone know why that was? First time it's happened with a 196.

You can’t have seen a 730 then…

Not my picture.
Picture shows 730002 at Barnt Green in orange and purple WMR livery. Grey skies.
Looks much better than a 196 to me. There's no accounting for taste, is there? But I'm not well up on the latest EMUs, so can't comment any further.

But the acid test is: how well do 196s power up Old Hill Bank? As I think I've said before, my impression is that a 172 is no better than a healthy 150.

Probably more important to test how well they go up the Lickey, as that's the route they'll mostly be on. Being a regular traveller on that route I'd say the 172s are the best Diesel units I've been on up there from a standing start at Bromsgrove - and that's before the station was relocated, giving them a little run up now.

Only been up a Lickey on a 170 which I'm sure many knows what its like so I look forward to see how the 196s and 730s will perform... doubt much will beat the impressive performance the 323s put in though, But that going off topic for this thread

Class 150 max up Old Hill Bank 41mph. 172 good unit 53 mph. Absolutely smash a 150.

Good to have some stats there, helps back up the feeling that the 172s fly up Old Hill. They do a cracking job of the Lickey too, and I have zero doubt the 196s will do very well on that too.

Yes, but how many of those are there? I posted a while back how I was amazed at the performance of a freshly-workshopped pair of 172/0s (when they were first transferred to Tyseley), which was way above the 'run of the mill'.

I've no reason to doubt that the 196s will shoot up there (or Lickey) when new so perhaps the question should be: will they be able to sustain that performance?

The 196's pull away noticeably quicker than even FLIRTS, so I think they will have no problem whatsoever.

So once the Hereford 170 diagram goes over to 196s, will there be no more 170 operation? Or will it be closer to Shrewsbury where services swap around from 196s to 170s depending on availability?

Will be 196s from then unless one fails or a 170 is used during peak times like they have been doing recently.
