It’s now quite rare that they turn up on the Shrewsburys now, it’s mostly 196s. 170s are making more appearances on Herefords than they used to though.
Nope! Still only 3 booked & working off Worcester. Although only a pair out today.

I dont think they are. In fact, I noticed 172s deputising for 170s more often now.

There seems to be more 170+172 pairings than there was for a while, something that WMR avoided due to the mix of drivetrains.
There’s still only the one 170+172 pairing booked. One day last week it was swapped with the pair of 170’s for maintenance issues.

The 170/172 pairings were actually avoided due to door issues with the way sdo worked. Nothing to do with drive trains door sdo issues resolved

Indeed, I remember when the initial talk of 170+172 pairings happened. So glad I never needed to work them, Auto/Manual SDO on the same units!

I had 196109 yesterday from Shrewsbury to Telford Central on the peak extras and it lost an engine coming in and the unit completely shut down. Basically a CTRl and delete to reset the unit to get it doing again. However, the same issue happened at Wellington so i bailed at Wellingtin because I had no idea how long the issue would take. Another CTRL delete happened at Wellington again and it got going. Made up time all the way to Birmingham so it looked like the issue never happened again or else it would have been even later. Arrives at Birmingham some 15 or so minutes late in the end. The gaurd was saying at Shrewsbury the unit isn't meant to do these things and it keeps happening.

I had something similar onboard 196101 on Friday when the train kept on randomly going into max brake (that's what the conductor told us at least)

I'm sure it'll all get ironed out eventually, still it doesn't exactly fill you with confidence.

I agree with this, it's just teething issues, give it a year or so and they will run much more reliable than the 170's (for those who aren't local to the area the WMR sets were know to be quite reliable.)

When they work they aren't, seats apart, bad trains at all as long as some genius doesn't decide to run a two coach train after a PL football game.... The 1815 from Wolverhampton to Shrewsbury on Saturday which was full and standing on leaving Birmingham according to the PA to Wolvo station. It arrived late and finally left Wolvo about 1855....

It doesn't no. It was the only CAF product to fail on me on Monday as I had a 195, 397 and the 197 which were all perfectly fine with no problems. Funny it had to be the 196 out of the examples I had on the day. Typical really.

Could any kind soul please put me out of my misery and gen me up on what worked the 1726 Birmingham-Shrewsbury and 1840 return, as well as ideally the 1826 from Birmingham to Shrewsbury, please?

I kind of didn't realise there was a depot kick-out turn at 1726, the one an hour earlier I knew about, and the 1826 was also new to my memory banks. I had been going to see what was on the 1826 from Birmingham and the 1840 from Shrewsbury, but chose to instead head back into town with Avanti before a visit to Burger King.

The 1826 was 196104.
I'm afraid I can't find the rest on part time spotter.

Probably better asking on non-urgent TOPS requests, although someone might reply here too

True, I thought about that not too long ago. Might do it tomorrow :)

EDIT: Added a photo of 196104 at New Street (on the 1256 to Shrewsbury) and 196109 on the 1626 from Birmingham 8-)

Unexpectedly my first 196 today (2G25, 1740 Shrewsbury - Birmingham)

Isn't the bar under the window airline seats a pain? Whoever thought that was a smart idea? o_O

Is it a bar that allows the seats to be cantilevered from the sidewall of the train?
It is indeed, and it's exactly where I want to put my feet!

Other trains have cantilevered seats without this problem, so it isn't inevitable.
