The 195s and 331s do have something - I think it may be HVAC related - that periodically makes a rather distinctive sound not dissimilar to when the drain pump in a washing machine kicks in, so presumably it was that.
Is it bizarre that I find that particular sound rather soothing.

Required 196002 was on the even hours from Nuneaton to Leamington yesterday so I selected the 1637 from Nuneaton for a ride. Unfortunately a set of doors decided to play up on this service and would not allow the locking to lock so after a few minutes the train was cancelled and it left ECS. The rest of the diagram was cancelled and 172215 on the other diagram was left to get on with it.

I see today from Part Time Spotter that 196002 is back today on the other diagram. Hopefully some overnight Tyseley magic has fixed the door problem.

Yes, was on it's own. Passed it on departure from University this morning.
The morning services on that diagram can probably cope as a 2 car service. Certainly the one in to Birmingham via Camp Hill can, and its previous working in arriving just after 7 can too. Not sure about the workings southbound tho, or later in the day

Tonight's 1848 Hereford-Birmingham New Street is in the hands of 196005+196001. The 1720 Birmingham New Street-Hereford was 196012+196003.

All duds, so my red pen stays safely in storage. Back to the walking mileage challenge then!

A 196/1 (196103) is reported on Part time spotter to be working diagram TS603 (which involves university station) for this morning only; does this mean that the unit has been fitted with guard pannels?

Are there any 196’s out today?
All WMR Birmingham-Shrewsbury services will be 196s. There’s one or two diagrams on Hereford services, but I believe 172 substitutions are quite common, which is the same with Nuneaton-Coventry-Leamington services.

According to Part Time Spotter NO 2 car 196s were out last Fri or Thursday with just 4 or 5 4 car 196s out so only on Shrewsbury route barring one maybe. Are there problems or is Part Time Spotter wrong? Only a week or two ago up to 9 or 10 2 car 196s were out plus several 4 car 196s. Was hoping to see if one was out on Nuneaton to Leamington services yesterday but none as engineering works so we're buses.

I can attest that a 2 coach train I noticed on Live Rail Record, assumed to be a 196, was actually a 172, as was every other Hereford line train I saw.

I was on 196002 from Bromsgrove at 1408 into New Street.

Up Lickey I noticed the engine kept changing between two distinct speeds.
Like an old-fashioned car automatic transmission hunting between gears.

I'll admit I don't know anything about diesel -eletric transmissions, but I presume on a contemporary design the control systems are all implemented in software. Given that; it didn't seem like the most refined control strategy.

Yes, a single 196/0.
Can comment on today as not at work. But this week the only 196 out on Herefords mon to Fri has been the 06:28 Wos - Hereford & 07:32 Hereford - New st. Been a 4 car formation every day. Yesterday 001 & 002 where out as a pair all day.

They will get to 40/41 & then try & change gear. They will sit on the gear change then all the way up.

Depending on the type of transmission, there will be a noticeable change in engine tone during the transition from torque converter to fluid coupling. On certain units this happens at between 40 and 50mph, might that be what you heard?

As somebody who writes software, albeit nothing to do with the rail industry, you typically want to avoid that sort of hysteresis.
It typically causes excessive mechanical wear and tear (and poor NVH)

Yep. They are in eco mode at present. Apparently when put into normal they do the same at 47mph.

Its a diesel mechanical drive with a 6 speed gearbox

Thanks, helps explain my experience.

Still seems like a control system you might find on a 1970s car rather than a 2020s train!
You’ll also find similar setups on the 172s with WMR, as well as the other CAF Civity DMUs (195/196/197s).
