I know we've done this to death but why oh why are people so stupid? I'll be open and say I don't approve of window hanging at all (even if it's only the head out) but putting, as is evidenced here, your whole upper body out of the window is beyond idiotic. I can't even also begin to imagine why you'd get out your iPhone to takes pics too, dandling it over an operational line out of a window. It also looks like he gave the two fingers up to that 377 too!

One day, it will end up with someone being killed. Also, and I speak as someone of this generation, it appears to be mainly teenagers and those in their 20s who do it, I've been on plenty of HSTs, Youtube videos and railtours and it's never the older ones doing it.

Sorry if it sounds like I'm ranting but when I see such stupidity I can't help it!

I never do it on a mainline because of the unpredictable dangers. However I have once or twice been caught on camera doing it at the preserved railway where I volunteer. This being only on single line track where I know there isn't the chance of being hit by passing trains or vegetation.

The only time I have done this was Bristol to London at 01:30 when we had been stationery for 2 hours there was only about 10 people on the whole train and the guard and I both had a few fags out the window and did a crossword by far the best delay I have ever had

I only really stick my head out when the train is pulling in the station and it's on the platform ready to open the door. I see guard do this all the time. I have also seen guards just pleasantly standing there with half their body out (which I used to do ) and I once asked a guard what time the train arrives in Truro from the carriage before the one he was in and he just got his paper out and told me the times from his window where he was leaning out to where I was leaning out. Looking back that was a bit stupid from myself and him. Sometimes I might put my head out for a few seconds depends where I am. Not very wise mind you

Regarding the video, around the 1:50 mark whatever he is doing is a bit stupid and he is leaning a bit too far out really especially flailing or whatever its called. Trains not exactly going slow either.

Why did you do the crossword out the window?
How did you see the clues, it would have been dark?
Its a good job it wasnt raining, the paper would have got soggy and the pen would have gone through it!

There is of course a distinct difference between doing it on a single-track preserved line at 25mph and on a fully operational mainline where trains can appear with no warning on the next track at high speed.

Knowing telstarbox, I don't think he is excusing such behaviour, just providing a possible explanation as to why it happens.

Some people like the sound of the locomotive hence you'd see it on railtours and pres lines (especially diesel galas), some people just like the feel of the wind in their face. I've done it before and there is more than enough clearance between passing trains, bridges and signals. The only risk is vegetation but a leaf or a small twig is certainly not fatal, can be abit painful though at speed!

In Japan leaning out of the window is part of the job if you're a guard. They do it when coming into and leaving stations looking in case anyone falls under and to ensure a quick release of the doors. I believe seeing the train in and out of stations was once part of BR's guard rulebook?

Sorry, my initial response was unnecessarily flippant and I wasn't trying to play down the danger.

I used to travel to secondary school on the 'slammers' and window hanging was common then until bars were fitted over the windows and slammers were subsequently replaced anyway. This was with Eurostars passing on the adjacent line. Not big or clever but surely most of us did things in our youth that we wouldn't do now?

I only dare do it on a preserved line when we are not moving too fast or as an HST is stopping at a station, so I can open the door.

Doing it on a busy line at speed is quite frankly ridiculous.

This young chap seems to crop up regularly on places like YouTube with videos such as this, he also seems wear TOC uniform on occasion (I've seen several photographs and videos of him wearing a SWT guards jacket). More worryingly most of the time he does seem to be accompanied by young adults who not only film his endeavours but encourage it.

The video exists in a public arena (YouTube) and the chap in the video appears to have consented to this as his mate was doing the filming. Therefore the contents of the video are fair game for debate.

There is also the concern that young enthusiasts will see this video and engage in the same actions, which is more likely than if the video had not been uploaded.
