Blimey, you haven't half chosen a complicated fare for working out permitted routes.
The tickets you refer to have the Maltese Cross which permits travel via London including cross-London transfer. The "any permitted" doesn't.
Not as clear cut as this. If the OP purchases the
Route Any Permitted Off-Peak Return, he will be allowed to use all of the permitted routes on the
Route +Via Manchester fare because it is cheaper, one of which is via London. That said, this would not apply if the ticket held is an
Anytime Return.
I have been trying to get my head round if there is a cheaper way of doing Winchester WIN -Todmorden TOD than a) being quick off the mark with advances (best case £74.20 return) or b) paying the full off-peak return price of over £110. My first foray into working out the routeing guide / splitting options has ended up in a fried brain. This may be because there is no other option!!

I'm confused as to why the "via Leeds" or "via Manchester" tickets cost more than "any permitted route" tickets. Are Leeds and Manchester not permitted on the any permitted ticket?...

I'm not going to look the maps up. Any route you can trace using these map permissions which goes via Banbury is a permitted route on the
Route Any Permitted Off-Peak Return between Winchester and Todmorden. For LONDON map permission, you combine Basingstoke - London Group maps with London Group - Blackburn maps (or London Group - Manchester Group in the latter case) and the route must be one which goes via Banbury.
Other Permitted Routes
There is no direct train between Winchester and Todmorden.
The shortest route entirely by rail, which is likely to be the one below, is permitted.

In addition, as I mentioned above, because this fare is more expensive than the
Route +Via Manchester fare, you are also permitted to use any route permitted by this fare. I am not going to do it all over again, but you go back to fares check and pick out appropriate routeing points which pass fares check for #1, and go through the same process again.
Clearly travel via Manchester in this case would be permitted, so is via London , but can you find a permitted route via Leeds using this fare?
