just gets more and more overcrowded...
one of the reasons is the added tram line they have put in alongside platform 9.
however no extra entrances/exits have been added so there is always severe congestion getting on and off the platform.

this needs to be looked at as I think there is an increasing likelihood of a serious accident at this station

Why? What is now platform 9 and the tram stop used to be platforms 9 and 10 of the 'big railway', and could see two crowded eight coach trains arriving simultaneously there with the same number of exits. The platform is easily big enough to contain the passengers who use it, so what significant potential for a serious accident do you perceive?

It is being looked at but for CP6 - a second mid platform dispersal bridge for interchanging passengers is part of the overall Waterloo capacity enhancements project, it includes a number of outlying stations.

In the long term the station will be almost totally rebuilt if Crossrail 2 happens, I doubt many current issues will stay the same...

on other platforms (I think for example platforms 7 and 8) there is a clear up/down policy. you can only go in one direction. on platforms 9/10 this doesnt exist (yes there are some small signage, but everyone ignores this). Because there are more trams now, more people are trying to get down the steps to these whilst ever more people are trying to get up. I have already seen fights break out on these steps and I can only see it getting worse

yes I think Wimbledon would be totally rebuilt for Crossrail 2.
however as we are probably 15+? years off this I think something should be looked at before then. Probably wont though

Wimbledon definitely needs an interchange bridge at the London end imo. I agree P9/10 stairs are a nightmare.

In my experience the up/down instructions are universally ignored on all staircases. Fights breaking out are a security issue, not safety per se, and are a reflection of the great British passenger's propensity to ignore signs.

Wimbledon is far from alone in its congestion problems and far better off than many. Take Redhill, for example, where the staircase leading from platform 3 is about four feet wide with a 180 degree turn halfway down. An arriving train (from London) disgorges its passengers as others are struggling up the narrow stairs, often with suitcases for Gatwick - chaos often ensues. Just along the platform, however, the old GPO bridge, with its lift shafts to each platform, remains abandoned and there are no plans to provide a new bridge for interchange, even with the construction of the additional platform now underway.

Liverpool Central (at least the Northern Line platforms) must be well up the list of most congested/ badly designed stations. Think Clapham North/ Clapham Common crossed with Clapham Junction (well, not quite, obviously, since that is by far the busiest station ever).

The one way system at Wimbledon P5 (Waterloo-bound) is in my experience well followed in the morning peak.

Before Tramlink, those platforms would been filled by much more lightly used (compared to now) 4-car (?) Thameslink services and the odd 2-car 456 from West Croydon - not really comparable.

Could have said the same about the new tram platform - trams would all be potentially moved to street running in Wimbledon centre come Crossrail 2 so why bother putting in a new platform now.

I'm going back to the days of 8 car EPBs and SUBs on the 'wall of death' line. Thameslink workings have usually been 8 cars.

I wasn't trying to suggest it would be nugatory work, they could easily justify installing a new bridge and get maybe ten years use out of it, just indicating that the post Crossrail 2 station may be a totally different layout again...

I was thinking the same thing today as I came off the London bound platform.

I am given 6 minutes to change trains and my inbound train was 3 minutes late. 6 minutes is the official transfer time there. I made my connection at least

I imagine there are stations with less passengers that have more footbridges and subways than Wimbledon.

It needs doing in my opinion so it will be great when the do.

In the short term they could introduce separate lanes for platforms 9 and 10. That wouldn't help ease congestion but it would separate people out at least.

Some will of course ignore the no exit signs. They do at Surbtion and when they do, they might find me coming down in the opposite direction. There only really being space for one.

Great lengths have been gone to at Wimbledon to try to force people to use the correct side of the staircases but many still thwart the system. It's a little better than it used to be, but with so many people these days glued to their devices, large numbers don't even look where they are going, let alone at signs.

Wimbledon has been removed from the Wessex Capacity Programme of work pending Crossrail 2 works. I don't see anything else happening before that is decided.

Redhill is another station where a second interchange route is desperately needed, but nothing will happen for as far ahead as anyone can see (despite the existence of the ex-GPO bridge already). To provide a bridge here, and at Wimbledon, should not be hugely expensive, given the wide platforms and lack of other obstructions. However, the risk of ending up with an East Croydon-style disaster is significant enough to make one hope nothing is attempted!

Would it be possible on the SWT and Underground platforms to have stairs about halfway along the platform up to a footbridge? This would enable an interchange between them without passengers having to go to the existing footbridge at the western end of the station, which gets very crowded at rush hours.

Would it also be possible on the SWT platforms to have a walkway above each platform which would lead from this new footbridge to the existing footbridge? This would help reduce the numbers of people milling about on what are at rush hours crowded platforms (the crowding has been made worse by the safety fences that have been installed which cut off from use a fair-sized chunk of the platforms).

Of course it would be quite possible. Before the recent few posts suggesting abandonment of Wimbledon improvements (under the Wessex capacity umbrella project) an additional interchange footbridge was quite clearly forecast, a few years ago it had made its way into one of the enhancements plans, although it was subsequently edited out..

Anything is possible, however even a second footbridge would be rather expensive at that location. And would be just about the first thing to have to go if Crossrail 2 happens.

Of course if Cross Rail 2 doesn't happen then they could consider it.

Anyone know if Cross Rail 2 would help ease the congestion?

Assuming we're still talking about Wimbledon I don't see why it would have to be expensive at all - there are clear, wide platforms with no obstructions at the northern ends. A structure similar to that put in at New Cross Gate while the ticket hall was being rebuilt would be fine if it is thought that it would be only temporary. The same goes for Redhill - wide, clear platforms at the north end. It's hard to see two easier stations of their size to insert a footbridge - possession availability apart, of course. For Redhill, possibly construct off-site (the huge new contractors' site for platform 0 would be perfect), and crane in in one night.

That is true for platforms 1-8. Platform 9/10 (which in my experience is one of the busier platforms) stops someway short of the rest on the north end, roughly inline with the platform canopies on the rest of the platforms. Building a footbridge which accesses platform 1-10 is going to be a lot more difficult than one that does 1-8. It'd have been a lot easier if they hadn't added a headshunt to platform 10b as you could have then used that as a landing space for the footbridge.

It's quite bad at other stations too

At Harrow and wealdstone, during peak times, the LM train will pull into platform 5, and half the train seemingly rushes out, toward platform 1 to get the overground service, which leaves at the same time, so people absolutely leg it ( unless it's late) To add to this, the stairs are narrow. Seriously think an accident could occur

I suspect Mr Khan and his band of merry mayoral men and maidens will need to scrutinise the stations which have the worst crowding during interchanges.

New Cross Gate was rather expensive, and Wimbledon has more than twice as many platforms.

In any event, the district line platforms aren't wide enough to take the footbridge steps that are needed for the flows expected.
