So we've gone from hourly to Liverpool via Airport and hourly TFW to Piccadilly non stop to nothing today!

TFW passing through but not stopping

Tbf the Northern hasn't run on strike days from Wilmslow last few dates.. interested to know why TFW not

Is it an Avanti staffed station? If so then the staff may be on strike? Can't remember if they do dispatch there but if so trains can't stop if they can't be dispatched.

Maybe its to prevent overcrowding, i.e. at Manchester Piccadilly TfW want to avoid the situation of people boarding trying to go to Wilmslow preventing passengers going to stations beyond Crewe (who in theory shouldn't be impacted by the strikes) from boarding the train.

Yes platforms 2, 3 and 4 require staff to dispatch.

Very necessary.

I remember Wilmslow switched to set down only (towards Manchester) and pick up only (towards Crewe) in a recent strike. Stockport was likewise limited. Even then the trains were very busy. Now without the 175s it will be particularly bad on the TFW.

There should still be buses between Wilmslow and Manchester, not as much use for going south if TFW dropped the pick up on Crewe trains.

I noted this time mention that stations were closing based on who staffed them, including Piccadilly, so maybe that is more of what has happened than TFW changing stopping plans.

The service 130 formerly run by ARRIVA from Manchester to Macclesfield via Wilmslow has been terminated for quite some time now. D & G Buses run a 130 service from Macclesfield to the Wythenshawe area via Wilmslow, but I am unsure if it runs on Sundays.

There was once a service 378 service from Stockport to Wilmslow, but that too has ceased to be.

What was previously Liverpool to Alderley Edge via Earlestown and Styal on strike days became Liverpool to Manchester Airport on strike days from the December 2022 timetable change because the normal non-strike day service is now Liverpool to Manchester Airport.

If by "Wythenshawe area" you mean Manchester Airport via Wythenshawe Interchange, then yes.

As you say, no Sunday (or public holiday) service.

I understand that the D & G service 130 calls at Wythenshawe bus station and calls into Heald Green to the village centre, where it then goes down Outwood Road, covering that part of the former 312 route. There has been a number of route alterations since D & G took over the service from Arriva and Wythenshawe Hospital has been on one of these alterations.

It is because it’s not staffed. It’s a dispatched station with those employed by Northern, who are affected by the Industrial Action.

TfW services also couldn’t call at Wolverhampton, early morning & late night, for a similar reason but with Avanti staff.

It's not been Avanti staff for quite a while now at Wolverhampton, the station is operated by West Midlands Railway

The strike day just gone, and the Thursday, none of the Tfw services stopped at Wilmslow.

Another reason for Northern not extending the service from MIA is I doubt a lot of the contingency guards have route knowledge for Styal.

Not stopping means even people intending to travel to Shrewsbury, Hereford or Cardiff can't use the service. It doesn't just affect people in Wilmslow trying to get to those destinations. The station car park at Wilmslow is often full, as it's a local hub for regional and Intercity services.

Trying to get from Wilmslow to Manchester by bus involves a change at either Wythenshawe or Handforth Dean. As the buses to both Wythenshawe and Handforth Dean are only hourly, it might mean connections don't work well. And God forbid if someone from Knutsford had planned to travel to Cardiff on a strike day on the basis they could get a direct bus to Wilmslow station. It would take them a couple of hours to get to Manchester using other public transport.

Pick up only in the Crewe direction caters for people in Wilmslow going to Shrewsbury, Hereford and Cardiff. The only flow it prevents using the train is Manchester to Wilmslow which, seems right given the TfW train is the only way to get to the places you mention.

No doubt Wilmslow gets a huge number of people using it, as a regular user of the Marches trains I know how many get on and off.

Likewise there is no easy way to say that any flow should not be catered for, but even 1 change of bus is better for the Wilmslow to Manchester flow than leaving people unable to get on the train because so many passengers are doing Manchester to Wilmslow.

In an ideal world all the 158s not being used by Northern could be borrowed by TfW, but that doesn't work for so many reasons. So TfW ends up with 2 carriage trains trying to fit the normal TfW flow plus all the passengers that would have been on Northern or Avanti between Manchester and Wilmslow. I think you can see why there is no Manchester to Wilmslow option in a strike.

As CheshireCat mentioned on the most recent strike day, TfW didn't stop at Wilmslow at all - not even to do pick up/ set down. This was a change in policy from previous strike days. Manchester local passengers are one thing but TfW decided they didn't want the long distance passengers starting journeys in Cheshire either.

Given Northern have already loaned two units to TfW Rail and Northern have 48 short formations currently listed on Journey Check, I'm not sure Northern have spare units. I would hope any not being used right now are either being maintained or refurbished.
