Today is the anniversary of William Huskissons death in 1830 and during the Rainhill trials which were to determine motive power used over the following decades.

William Huskisson was not killed during the Rainhill Trials. He was killed on the opening day of the Liverpool & Manchester Railway. The Rainhill trials had taken place during the previous year, 1829.

A very unfortunate event, that the age of the public carrying railway got off to such an ignominious start!

There is a large sized statue atop an inscribed plinth to commemorate William Huskisson in Chichester Cathedral.

I seem to remember a lineside shrine at Parkside Junction, where Huskisson was run over, possibly just underneath the M6 overbridge. It was of Portland stone on the south side of the line. Is it still there ? Is it in any way accessible ?

It is still there and the inscribed tablet that is there is a replacement one that replaced the vandalised and shattered original. The remains of the original inscribed tablet are in the National Railway Museum at York.

I think that Network Rail are not at all keen on the idea of any unofficial encroachment onto their land to view this iconic monument at close quarters.

There is a copy of the tablet at Newton-le-Willows station, at the top of the staircase for the Manchester bound platform.
