Will this be treated a two separate journeys?

I think it will....

So my friend is looking at train tickets to York. They say its cheaper to buy the ticket from Kings Cross to York.

I have advised them to buy a ticket from their starting point (Carshalton) to York, as its not cheaper. (£6.00 each way to/from KGX)

If the Carshalton > Victoria train is late and the train from KGX is missed, then they won't be covered as they will have in effect done two separate journeys under 2 different tickets (although the train to Vic will be on contactless), and may therefore have to buy a new ticket from KGX to York. The ticket from KGX is not a flexible one, it'll be an advance ticket. Whereas, if they get the correct train from Carshalton, and the journey is from Carshalton to York, then they'll be covered in case of any delays etc.

Please can someone clarify.

The gap across London is a bit debatable. However it can be avoided by one of the tickets being to/from London Zone 1, which any splitting site will do for you with a through itinerary to confirm it's one journey.

The most important thing is to travel in accordance with a valid itinerary. When I was at King's Cross we were happy to pass people on to the next train in such circumstances as long as the right amount of time had been allowed.

Minimum transfer time Victoria-King’s Cross is, I think, 41 minutes 0700-1900 and 46 minutes outside these times. Time between booked arrival into Victoria and booked departure from King’s Cross.
