Will the refurbishment of the Northern 15X units include any cab improvements or is it just the passenger area? If so what improvements are planned and when ?

Driving cabs were meant to be in stage 3 of all the refurbs. Stage 3 was code for it will never happen. Northern have told staff that cab refurbs will now not happen.

TPE, Virgin, XC have great cabs it goes without saying. Even Merseyrail are getting new fleets with great cabs. Even Metrolink have them now with the M5000's. But some of the cabs at Northern we have to put up with are GRIM with no end in sight.

Soon to be the only TOC to have to battle uncomfortable cab conditions and poor ergonomics day after day, along with all the associated neck & back & knee problems. There will be several Northern Depots that are not going to see ANY of the new trains (195's & 331's) when they arrive, and most the depots that will see the new trains will still have 80% plus of their work on older traction.

It is very depressing to see improvements being made to the passenger area of trains but the driving cab remaining untouched. It's the equivalent of getting a very old, low-spec, worn out car from the 1980's, putting in comfy passenger seats but leaving the driver with an old uncomfortable one and making no improvements to anything that will effect the driver - which never happens.

The hardest part of the job is battling poor cab conditions yet Northern are lower paid than the other TOC's, seen a lot of staff go on long term sick due to issues with the seats/cabs.

I’m surprised you put up with it lol
When they refurbished the Tyne and Wear stock the drivers decided on the colour scheme and groups of them came to Doncaster to try out the refurbished cab seat

EMT local side Drivers (Notts, Lincoln, Boston and Norwich) also share your pain.

We also share your pain up here in scotRail where we have 156s with nice refurbished interiors but no changes to the driving cabs apart from the worst paint job I'v ever seen! Northern actually have better driving seats than us in their 156s!
