Will summer 2013 be a good one?

After last years washout Summer is this years summer going to better? I think we are well overdue a good one. The only good one I remember was 2003 and 2006.

We did have some nice days last year, it wasn't terribly bad surely? After all the summer of 2003 and its heatwave were lethal I recall.

I went to Benidorm in September 2003, the first thing the rep at Alicante Airport said was 'shame you never came a week ago, we have had a heatwave' from what I remember it was hotter here all that summer and it lasted till October

I seem to remember the Ashes summer of 2005 being relatively warm and dry. Part of the reason England won with conditions being ideal for reverse swing!

Well, certainly in Newcastle where i live summer was a washout as most of the UK was. London usually always gets good summers its not uncommon for it to reach 30c even in september.

I will give an example of the futility of attempting to forecast summer weather in January. In 1975, Lancashire CC were playing Derbyshire CC at Buxton in a County Championship match. On 31st May, Lancashire won the toss and chose to bat and with Clive Lloyd in imperious mood, they amassed a total of 477-5 declared at the end of the first day. June 1st came and overnight a thick layer of snow covered the ground. The two umpires were Dicky Bird and Dusty Rhodes and Dicky Bird made an announcement...SNOW STOPPED PLAY...with a big smile on his face. As the day progressed, the weather began to change and a high pressure weather system saw temperatures rocket at mid-day and this enabled the clearances to begin. However, the pitch had been very badly affected and what was a perfect batting track on the first day became a nightmare of a pitch when play was deemed fit to commence on the third day. June 2nd came and saw that Derbyshire were totally uneasy as how to play the seamers on the pitch that now faced them and were all out for only 42 in their first innings (Lee 13.2 overs, 11 maidens, 10 runs, 4 wickets being the pick of the bowling). Derbyshire followed on and were only slightly more at ease with the wicket in their second innings and were all out for 87. Lancashire had won by the very wide margin of an innings and 348 runs.

Nah we usually have a week in April/May time when hosepipe bans are set in force, the BBQ summer raises it's head and temperatures are "hotter since records began"

This is then followed by about two weeks of rain

Our weather is really strange compared to the likes of Spain in the summer which get around 9 hours of sunsine most days. England's weather is really poor on the whole we can get some nice weather but its questionable how long it last's for!

I remember going on Holiday to france in 2003, staying in the hotel watching the weather forcast "I have some good news, the heatwave will finish in Britian tomorrow, It will move southwards into france."

Depends of course what you class 'good' as. Thinking of another Spanish or possibly Portuguese rail trip this summer, because I do enjoy a bit of hot weather for a week or two during the Summer months.

I always find March and April good months being very warm and sunny. Yet June, July and August I think are the worst months espeically up north.

l'm surprised about all this stuff about washout, cold weather etc. l thought Summer 2012 was quite warm. l remember spending many weeks in the garden/parks at a time in the sun!

Well certainly in 2012 there was lots of flooding did you not see it on the news? it was the wettest summer in 100 years they said. your right there was some days of hot, sunny weather however it was short lived here in Newcastle. It may of been better down south?

Or over the Pennines? Manchester had many nice days of sunny weather and it wasn't better in the south, flooding, droughts a real messed up year for weather in the south.

Naturally, down south will get warmer summers than up North.
