Bittern did a few years ago on the GWML during the 'small hours' and i believe there are videos out on youtube

Re Earlier comment on 60010 having been damaged on its return to Canada, any chance of this being enlarged upon please?

60009 will never run again, but i would love to convince John to get 61994 up and running

Essentially, never say never, but it is extremely unlikely especially while the UK economy is under such strain and luxuries such as this are plummeting down any fantasy project lists.

Bittern then did three 90+mph on the ECML.

Flying Scotsman isn't original - it was rebuilt from a A1.

Mallard is largely original (in common with other class members its boiler and tenders were changed).

Evening Star AIUI is original having never even been repainted in its life.
Just seen a picture of Evening Star having a repaint in 1967.

There was talk a few years ago, but NRM put forward that it would never run again as it was to be conserved because of its historical importance, which seems a bit daft as it was restored to running order jn the 1980's. I travelled behind it on a Scarborough Spa Express, in the days when you just paid an additional price on top of a regular ticket to Scarborough. I think Scarborough council paid a substantial sum towards its restoration which I think also included the turntable installation at Scarborough.
They've probably realised after Flying Scotman's that the sheer cost involved of bring back a famous engine is just too much money especially now that the money is slowly drying up.

There is actually no need to take Mallard out of the NRM and spend millions on it to restore to mainline use. 60007 has just emerged from a full overhaul, is dual braked and mainline ready.
60019 is under overhaul at Crewe, is dual braked and will probably be mainline ready in 2024. These two are quite capable of carrying the mantle of any class A4s in the UK by repaints and numbers etc.
60009 will retire to it's permanent retirement home in Fife and Mallard can stay in the NRM.

I suggest that it would very unlikely that a situation would arise where more that two A4 charters were likely to run on the same day. Therefore Saphos and/or WCR or DBC would operate those two trains, which even then would split the potential custom.

I would personally prefer efforts be made to overcome the obstacles of the V2 returning to steam, constructing, completing and outshopping one of the two P2s to the mainline, and building and outshopping the Gresley V4, as well as maybe helping with the building and completing one of the two proposed B17s.

The marketplace for steam charters is shrinking whilst the projects are becoming more expensive.

60019 is in Kent and is not under overhaul.

Because it would be a special thing to mark the occasion.
There are quite a few anniversary’s coming up, I don’t see the NRM doing ‘special things to mark the occasion’ regarding these.

Can you imagine the trespass issues if Mallard ran on the main line again! Look how bad it has been with the Flying Scotsman since it returned to service. I think with Mallard would be ten times worse!

The V2 repairs could be less expensive than had first been envisaged. See post #85 from @MarkyT.

I am not entirely sure it would be any worse, or even as bad.

Most of the trespass is down to the mass-media letting the general populous know when 'Scotsman is passing, and the fact that it is 'the most famous loco in the world'.

Mallard is (only) the record holder for the fastest that a steam locomotive.

Mallard would garner similar attention to Scotsman.
