Will HS2 have catering?

I doubt the London-Birmingham services will. It's not a very long journey. Best guess, there might be a couple of vending machines.

It may well be that they standardise across the services. Avanti West Coast has catering on the Birmingham route despite not really needing it just because it's the same as all the other routes including ones with journey times well in excess of twice as long.

Certainly the Glasgows justify it.

My guess is that there'll be an 'at-seat service' - i.e. a trolley - rather than any kind of fixed catering provision. That lets DfT cram as many seats in as possible, and makes it easier to not provide catering when it's unnecessary/operationally inconvenient/would require paying someone.

On this and other similar threads we should probably distinguish more between the new infrastructure between London and Birmingham and the services that will be running on it, some of which will continue further north AIUI.

They don't offer them on MKC<->EUS but that's in part because the fare is too low (as they don't set it). Not sure about other short journeys.

It seems rather silly to put catering on a train with a journey time of ~45 minutes to Birmingham.

Even 90 minutes to Manchester seems..... inadvisable.
I think it would be better to not bother with catering, given the bias of journeys towards the very short.

But I expect HS2's desired standardisation of rolling stock will force all trains to carry catering facilities of questionable usefulness. Which won't help the overcrowding the 200m sets will produce.

In Norway and I think other countries many trains have vending machines - obviously they take up a bit of space and are limited in selection but seems a sensible idea.

Im pretty sure a buffet on each train has been specified although whenever that gets used is another matter!

The HS2 train specification (section 10.8) describes three options which should be available: Catering Trolley Stowage Point; Catering Cafe Shop; Catering Kiosk, with conversion possible between these.

The "One seat Layout", which I think is the actual proposed layout, is going to be two Trolley Stowage Points in each unit (section 11.1.6)
