Will Crossrail make Burton to London via Reading viable

I'm guessing Burton is one of the larger towns without any direct trains to London, but we do have a plethora of alternatives via Derby, Tamworth and Brum.

We also have three direct trains to Reading in a morning. Will Crossrail make this a viable alternative to London?

Burton-on-Trent to Reading: Book now for Monday morning £68.75 one-way. 2 hours and 8 minutes.

Surely changing at Derby or Birmingham would be significantly faster anyway

Probably so, I was just thinking I'd be already on TFL as I came into London rather than having to get onto the tube at Euston or St P's

It's probably moot anyway, because even if a through ticket was sold there are no direct trains back from Reading at night

Crossrail from December doesn’t make it any more viable than it is today, it’s only replacing the stoppers into Paddington initially.

It looks like even when the full thing is open it's going to take 55 minutes from Reading to TCR so over 3 hours in total.

Probably not a viable alternative for practical travel, but maybe fun to do as a one off.

If you take the 0800 from Burton you will be at Reading at 1009. You would then need to change for a stopping train to central London.

I don't see why anyone would put up with a cramped Voyager for such a journey when you could depart 50 minutes later, change at Tamworth, and be into London Euston before you had left Reading.

However it is a permitted route, so there is nothing to stop you doing this if you would like to sample the route!

With a six minute connection at Tamworth? That's flippin tight though!!
