Fee free means not charging the £10 change fee. The question of fare uplift is separate.
The two are intractably linked. Even if no fee is charged, a change certainly isn't "free" if you have to pay £50 extra because there are only walk-up fares available.

What usually isn't offered is the ability to change to a different day entirely (rather than the day before/after) without paying any increase in fare, unlike even easyJet/Ryanair where a cancellation entitles you to change for totally different dates at no uplift at all.
Doesn't LNER do so? Is it restricted to same-day change only? (LNER automatically applies a voucher code for a change in Advance ticket resulting from a schedule change, if the fare becomes higher)

Bit of a pain reverting back to "fees". I have a journey that I want to book in January but the date is only provisional. It was very "passenger friendly" when I could book early (AP) but know it could be amended if needed. Now the two tickets would involve a £20 additional cost if changed.

If you book them from railsmartr.co.uk then they won’t.

Or one step forward, two steps back?
Not really, as the comment is about what using a different retailer may get you. In terms of BwC it’s more one step sideways and three steps back.
