I need to get from Penrith to London on 14-May-22. With just over three weeks to go tickets are not yet available. Is this just because they have not finalised the timetable yet, or does it mean that they will not operate at all for engineering work? Many thanks in advance.

You can see on National Rail Enquiries that there is engineering works between Glasgow Central and Carlisle. NRE shows what trains are due to run, but as you say, there's no tickets for sale yet.

My personal view is that leaving it this late is taking a liberty!

I'm travelling the week after and have the same issue - means I can't take advantage of the Great British Rail sale and save on the £70 odd return fare.

It’s not just ticketing that is up the spout.

I am looking to travel south from Carlisle on Sunday morning 24th April but the first Avanti train seems to be the 12:46 to Euston. No buses south are advertised though replacement services look set to arrive from Scotland from mid-morning.

Yes there is engineering work, but why no service at all?

No service from where? Carlisle? Looks like there's 7 direct trains from there for Euston on Sunday. Fewer than usual, but at least there are still some running.

The first of those trains departs at 12:46. This is the earliest service south. Surely they have forgotten to organise replacement buses?

Trains from Carlisle to Euston at 08.44, 09.54, 10.54 according to National Rail.

The fundamental issue here is that the normal route from Glasgow is blocked by engineering works. Yes, there is a route via Dumfries, but the signal boxes on this line don't open until after lunchtime on a Sunday, and Avanti only have a limited number of Voyagers stabled in Polmadie, and an even more limited pool of drivers with route knowledge of the G&SW - so this isn't really a particularly useful option.

Furthermore, Avanti don't have any facilities to stable trains at Carlisle, or even at Preston (on Saturday nights), so the first southbound service is formed off an ECS from Longsight.

In turn, that can't get into Carlisle in time to form anything before the 12:46, because the WCML north of Carnforth only opens after 10am on a Sunday. In fact as late as 11:15, between Penrith and Carlisle in the Down (northbound) direction. So they will be running about as early as they possibly can, given the constraints.

Now, I agree that the standard blockades should be cut back in the event of engineering works preventing the normal arrangements in terms of stabling, through running etc. And even if nothing else, Avanti should be running earlier buses to replace trains - as they seem to be doing the following Sunday. But unfortunately that's the way that the timetable has been planned for this Sunday and it's a question of 'take it or leave it', pretty much :|

Tickets now available for this day.
Except they are not. The 1907 departure has a Rail Sale STD Premium, STD Off Peak, STD Anytime and 1ST Anytime available, no advances. All other trains are "sold out" so the fares clearly have not been loaded yet. Useless operator - what a shambles.

Advances on the Manchester route it seems, but none for Preston. Though when they are released, I wouldn’t be surprised if the first / last few trains of the day had no advances on them.. I’ve noticed this happen a few times with Avanti for seemingly no reason. @OLJR seems to have hit a similar issue.

I e-mailed three of Avanti's commercial and revenue management people to ask when they will release fares for most services.

Claire Hennebel - Head of Pricing & Revenue Optimisation
Michael Stewart - Director of Revenue Management
Sarah Copley - Executive Director, Commercial

Hopefully a little prodding will inspire action. Will report back if/when I get a response.

Dear Claire, Michael and Sarah,

I need to travel from Penrith to Euston on 14-May and while you have scheduled trains you have not yet released any fares for all bar two services.

Can you please advise when you will make fares available for sale.

Many thanks in advance.

Not sure it will make a timetable bid and upload appear any sooner to be honest. Avanti are behind the curve at the moment.

I heard back from Michael today, who kindly advised me that fares were just released. I bought my ticket for the train I wanted. Thanks Avanti! 8-)
