There is no such thing as a peak time train. Whether or not a train is allowed on an Off-Peak ticket depends on the restriction code of the ticket in question.

That being said, as I understand it all, or at least most, Off-Peak restrictions are lifted on bank holidays, at least in the electronic data version that journey planners use. This is despite the fact that many of them do not include such an exception in their text.

If you can get the Off-Peak ticket you have (or intend to get) - making sure that is the right Off-Peak ticket, as there are several different ones on most routes - to come up on www.nationalrail.co.uk when searching for the train you want to take, then it'll be valid.

As ForTheLoveOf says, “peak” or “off peak” is a function of the ticket you’re using, not the train you’re travelling on. In the case of a Newcastle to Glasgow Off-Peak Return the electronic version of the restriction code (the “unpublished restrictions” table at the bottom of that page) suggests that the usual time restriction on that ticket doesn’t apply on Easter Monday.

If you have a different ticket (e.g. to a destination beyond Glasgow) you should check that on brfares yourself as the restrictions may be different.

And on the side of Pendolinos, which sometimes curiously also say "PEAK TIME TRAIN", despite the fact that there are almost always numerous valid off-peak tickets for that train - some of them priced by VTWC!

They have posters too detailing the Peak Time Trains. It's always quite satisfying to leave Paddington around 1700 on a weekday using a combination of off peak tickets.
