Wigan Wallgate Platform 1 starter Signal

There is an LED 3 aspect starter signal opposite platform 1 (Southport / Kirkby Platform) that is for traffic going the opposite way to normal working. I have never seen anything use this signal so I was wondering does anybody familiar with Wigan Wallgate know why this signal was installed here in the first place? Has it got any use and is it used?
Wished I could ask the Wallgate signalmen

Wrong road starting signal for trains reversing back towards Manchester. Most Wallgate terminating services go out to the sidings to reverse but in the event of late running they could be sent straight back saving time.

Yeah, I didn't think about the Walgate terminating services; I think they may form the Wigan - Rochdale service some 10 minutes after arriving. Makes sense now.

Dunno about Exchange, but platform 1 was damaged by the winter frost and ice, and as a result is having it platform edge/coping stones replaced/relaid.

When I went past today the sidings had been excavated but the rails hadnt been lifted, viaduct damage possibly?
