Wigan-Robin Hood Line return

No railcard held.
Just want best value walk-up tickets.
Returning same day.
Outbound:
Wigan - any route - Nottingham
Return:
Nottingham - any route - Wigan

One of those legs must include The Robin Hood line (via Worksop).
I've not heard great things about Derby-Crewe reliability so would like to avoid it unless there are good connections coming from either direction.

Are you happy to go via Sheffield both ways?

Sheffield to Hucknall has a "via Worksop" fare which can be excessed in the relevant direction to "Any Permitted"

I've got down to £35 (£22+13) using Sheffield as a splitting point.
Bettered with £25 (£5 +£19) with a Stockport split now.
I'd prefer via Sheffield both ways as via Uttoxeter seems to be very unreliable according to what I read on this forum.

I don't think splitting at Stockport will work as a Stockport to Nottingham ticket does not allow travelling via Worksop and so you will not be able to travel on the Robin Hood Line.

The easiest reasonable way you can do it is as Yorkie suggests and split at Sheffield. Then get an Off Peak Day Return to either Mansfield or Hucknall. The via Worksop fare is £12.70 but the Any Permitted is only £13.80 if you didn't want to bother with excessing to return via Nottingham. The difference in price between via Worksop and Any Permitted is only a significant amount when using Anytime and Off Peak Returns rather than Day Returns.

This might be a bit of a faff, and I suppose you'd have to use the Hope Valley stopper to Sheffield, but does a GM Wayfarer help? It covers you all the way from Wigan to Grindleford and back.

I don't know the best tickets beyond Grindleford, but you've probably only got to check Grindleford to Mansfield (or whichever RH line station is cheapest) with a poss split at Dore.

- I think a ticket from Dore is valid via Sheffield - either because of an easement or because Dore only has platforms on the Hope Valley line

- Dore-Mansfield probably has the same "borh ways round' route validity as Sheffield-Mansfield.

The shortest route from Dore to places like Mansfield is clearly via Sheffield.

(Tickets from Dore for journeys via Chinley are allowed to double back via Sheffield)

A quick look at brfares.com confirms both "any permitted" and "via Worksop" fares are available.

Yes, you would have quite a journey from Dore to Nottingham if you missed out Sheffield!!

I had wondered about the Tfgm Wayfarer coming under the new "no need to call" rules, but didn't know how to confirm it. I wish the SY Travelmaster was.
