Considering virtually no buses ran in GM area yesterday I was wondering how did Northern cope with all the fans travelling to Wigan for Wigan V Man Utd match yesterday, I'm guessing that most services could have run as 4 coach services

Surely that was more of a Virgin issue for all the reds heading up from the south? ;)

Seriously though, do Northern normally strengthen services for the football? A few times I've been on trains heading to Blackpool that were rammed for Bolton games and these were just the normal 2 carriage services.

Very true :D

I don't believe they do, however on match days they do run special services from Piccadilly to Old Swamp Halt...

With regard to the Wigan game, it would only really be an issue for the away fans as the Wigan massive tend to come from a close proximity to the ground and walk over (at least the ones I see walking through the town centre)

Indeed - Wigan's fanbase is very localised. When Arsenal played them just before Christmas I took a Northern stopper to the game from Manchester Victoria and Arsenal fans heavily outnumbered those in Latics colours!

Quite a number of Arsenal fans were in for a shock on their way home from that one, given a large number of them were waiting at Wigan NW for their train south when suddenly the entire team turn up waiting for the Pretendelino (I had expected them to wait on the coach until it arrived, since it was booked a ten minute stop). Needless to say the prat from the team who wasn't happy with trainspotters filming the team would have had a coronary judging by the amount of camera phones out on Saturday <(

i caught the 18:09 Buxton service from Salford Crescent and it was full and standing, there were around ten + police on board and it was formed of 156459, on arrival at Piccadilly the train was totally empty! Two services from Salford to Man Vic between 1745 - 1805 were full and standing as well!!
