Out of curiosity, rather than planning an actual journey, I put Wick to Penzance into the Forums ticketing website. I had tried Penzance to Wick on another website, but it coudn't find anything at all.
Anyway, this is the journey it came up with. Am I going something wrong?

It looks like the FastJP journey planner might be excluding buses in Devon, and artificially inflating journey times to a ridiculous extent.

I checked another website and says take Scotrail to Inverness then edinburgh and then change for a voyager to penzance

Pedantically, it's a week in Taunton! Although the 9 hours overnight in Birmingham may well feel longer...

Presumably by the passenger waiting in Taunton until through trains resume! Is there much to do for 8 days in Taunton at this (or any) time of year?

Don't know Taunton itself, but... in the better part of the year (starting tomorrow, by some definitions) you've got Exmoor and the North Devon coast, not too far away, presumably accessible by buses.

Line is closed between Totnes and Plymouth until the weekend for Engineering work, Cross Country trains from the north turning round at Exeter and a bus replacement service running directly to Plymouth from Tiverton Parkway

I wonder if there is some kind of llimit on the max number of changes in the planner code, or at least the code gets less aggressive about searching beyond a certain point. That would explain this showing up on wick to penzance (which is already a very long and complex journey) but not on shorter journeys.
