Wi-Fi on Trains/Stations

So all 'IC' TOCs except Chiltern, TPE and FGW have it, some totally free, others like EMT and VT charging in standard. Just read WSMR and NXEA (Norwich-Liv St) are getting it installed, just wondered if there's any plans for anymore? Also, what stations have it, apart from Colchester and Reading? Thanks in advance

I was under the impression that EMT were only just getting round to installing it. Certainly when I was travelling on some 222s back in May they didn't have Wi-Fi.

Also XC don't have Wi-Fi.

Yeah, read it going on all Sheffield expresses, and the morning Nottingham headliner on EMTs CrossCountry keep getting fined by the DfT for the above fact, think it was part of their franchise agreement

I mean it's not like it's extremely expensive? Or is it just a case of the DfT saying no?

I mean we're so far behind America - they are even debating about making "super-wifi"

I think that Southern's Brighton - London route has it. I have heard that Eurostar is also looking into it. Grand Central I understand is fitting it.

Yes EMT is just getting around to fitting it.

Scotrail did investigate putting it on the Edinburgh - Glasgow service, but I think that is not going to happen.

Think you will find it is cost, many stations have it in their first class lounges (all East Coast lounges). St Pancras is the only station I can think of with free wi-fi throughout the station.

I put 'IC' the way I did because I didn't know if TPE and Chiltern are IC or not. I knew about the XC situation, just didn't put it in . I Think Glasgow-Edinburgh is a bit too short to have wi-fi (at about 45 mins), mind you if they have it on the Brighton Expresses you never know

That was probably one of the reasons that it has not gone ahead, it was supposed to be a 3G based solution. City link coaches on the route have wi-fi so this was the plan. But the even with the journey short time it does warrent first class and a trolley (take not SouthEastern on your rip-off line) The 3G reception on the route isn't bad and people use it. The 100 bus between Edinburgh Airport and Edinburgh City centre even has it so I don't think the journey is too short for people to use it (but I don't they will pay for the short distance)

It is a mix of train and land based through the existing (t-mobile) mobile phone network
Initially ten Class 170s will be installed with the equipment, which will be "restricted" to duties between Glasgow QS and Edinburgh
If successful then the remaining Class 170s (with First Class) will have the equipment installed, with the land based equipment extended on to :
Glasgow - Aberdeen
Edinburgh - Dundee
There are no plans to install between Edinburgh - Perth (via Fife) or between Perth - Inverness

That is what I said! (Although the amount of times recently an ex-SPT until seems to be on the line you may not thing so ) I see my use of English was not as good as it should be. I was really taking a dig at SouthEastern that they don't have either first class or a trolley on the rip off line, despite having a journey time is longer end-to-end than Edinburgh and Glasgow. People even pay first class between Glasgow and Falkirk a whole 18 minutes. HEX has first class for a 15 minute journey. I am surprised considering what how SouthEastern use any chance they can to extort money out of people on the rip off line they haven't put first class in it, I am sure they could charge £100 return for Margate to London passengers!

I can probably help you with that, but after reading and re-reading this post, your problems with spelling and grammar makes it so ambiguous that I regret that I still don't know what you're asking or saying.

EC services between Aberdeen, Glasgow, Edinburgh or Inverness and London have wi-fi, free and very widely available. I use it regularly with very little difficulty.

I thought it had been quitely forgotten about as I hadn't heard about it for a while, glad to hear it is still on the agenda. Keeping the units on the route may prove difficult considering how often the units with no first class show up these days. I have at times seen a Glasgow - Edinburgh have an SPT unit and a service to Alloa have a unit with 1st class, I guess either diagramming issues or a set swap to get a faulty unit back to Edinburgh is probably the most likely reason for this?

I've been using GC's wi-fi all this year.

They may have completed the roll out by now, but some of the 180's didn't have it earlier in the year.

You might be correct, but I used their wi-fi on GC's 180s this winter/spring time, but I couldn't look up any dates for you now.

Just checked thier (GC) website, they are advertising it on all trains now so the rollout must now be complete. The unit I was on that didn't have it was still in First colours and had not been through the refresh.

which TOCs and stations have secure networks, and which are unsafe for you to do anything that requires a password because people might be scanning?

On the last day of my 2 week ALR in March, my facebook account was hacked! Almost certainly due to my using a public wifi network at some point.

All of the unencrypted ones (which is all of them really) are susceptible to this, as are some encrypted ones. Using an SSH tunnel or VPN should prevent this, as you have an encrypted connection to the SSH/VPN server so people on the wireless network won't be able to see what you're doing.
If you can't do this, using solely SSL (HTTPS) websites will stop people seeing what you're doing. Facebook utilise this for logging in, but then use a regular HTTP connection, meaning people can steal your session data.
