I don’t think I have ever seen so many adverts on TV (apart from during the era of a subsequently disgraced BBC DJ!) trying futilely to promote rail travel.

What is the point in wasting money promoting rail travel when there are numerous days of strike action and many operators can’t run anything like a reliable service at weekends?

East Midlands Railway are offering reduced price London Theatre tickets for rail passengers, do they refund you the price of the theatre ticket if your chosen show coincides with a train strike?

It's called marketing. Why does Fosters advertise, when you know the beer is going to be awful?

They probably booked the spots weeks or months ago and have decided not to cancel, possibly in the hope that the strikes would be off or over. N.b. I have only limited knowledge of TV advertising practices: I do have some ethical standards.

Marketing falls into the bracket for tax reasons as "entertaining" so becomes tax deductible. It's a way of the bean counters writing off tax for relatively little outlay.

Advertising deals like group save and such would seem worth it. I’d agree it’s probably pointless advertising a season ticket to a commuter. They already know what they want. But families, group save, the attraction entrance thing, makes sense.

Also, I’d wager Coca Cola and McDonalds could probably never advertise again and sales wouldn’t drop. I’ve been to remote parts of Lesotho where the didn’t have TV, but they still had Coke. They still advertise.
