As pointed out, all stock should have them, even when not likely to be running under wires.

TfW's 158s however, do frequently run under the wires, eg:

There is a rather rude word for the orange line just above it.

Where on the TfW network, that this particular 158 unit might run, are there overhead wires? Crewe presumably is one such place. Must be numerous other locations.

Doubly so when you include ECS moves which may take them off their normal patch - e.g. to maintainers, etc.

Seven TJ - Cardiff
Oxley - Birmingham International
Crewe - Manchester Piccadilly
Warrington Bank Quay - Manchester Airport.

Just to name a few.

Cardiff, Crewe and on to Stafford and Birningham, Manchester Airport to Warrington Bank Quay, Wolverhampton to Birmingham International. I'd imagine it runs under the wires most days.

Crewe to Manchester Picc i/c via Styal, Warrington Bank Quay and Stoke-on-Trent
Warrington Bank Quay to Manchester Airport via Chat Moss
Halton Curve to Liverpool Lime St
Crewe to Wolverhampton via Stafford
Oxley to Birmingham International and various routes in Birmingham area
Cardiff to Severn Tunnel Jn

These would apply to whole TFW fleet not just individual one.

Off-topic, but what is the significance of the 7 below the unit number?

Believe it’s to signify which car is which; i.e. ‘2’ for the 52xxx car and ‘7’ for the 57xxx car.

All the lines south of the junction from where the Shrewsbury/Telford line joins towards New St and Birmingham International.

All rolling stock has them (or should have).
Not so actually - there are some former Southern Region types that do not have cantrail stripes as they never venture under the wires. SWT's Desiros never had them - I can't remember if SWR have put them on post-refurb.

There can't be that many current types that have *never* been under OHLE at some point in their lives (including delivery and being sent for heavy maintenance).

Nothing on the Desiro / 484 repaints, but cantrail stripes on the 158 / 159 fleet. Presumably needed for the Sprinters as they operate into Reading etc.

SWT 444 and 450 never had them from new, I suppose because there was no risk, and no rule.

But i think the SWT 158s and 159s had stripes long before GW wiring, possibly because they had needed to travel north somewhere for overhauls?

Yes the 159 and 159 has always had them. The slam door stock had them and thought it was strange that 450/444 did not have then, The 455 and 456 did have them but I cant remember it they still do.

Whilst no SWR stock actually travels under the wires (no dual electrified sections), P6 at Reading is adjacent to the ohle on the GWR main line.

The 159 fleet works into Reading from Basingstoke so does travel under the wires.

Good point. Neither the 450s nor the 458s have cantrail stripes, and they work daily into Reading P6.

From what I remember it was one of those H&S policies implemented before the HSE existed!
This was after some very unfortunate electrocutions of steam loco firemen working on tenders under the new WCML wires, in the early 60s.
I remember seeing the OHLE warning signs on WR Mk1 DMUs out of Paddington, operating their entire 30+ year lives without any OHLE present.

I remember as a kid (1960's/70's) seeing the overhead live wires on modernisation plan DMUs and wondering why. Many many years later Yorkshire got some electrification.
