RENFE operate AVE through services Barcelona - Seville and Valencia - Seville using the 'third-side' in Madrid without calling in the capital. They are considerably quicker than the traditional 'Torre del Oro' through service via Alicante.

The LGV interconnection was not *just* about bypassing Paris. Indeed it wasn’t even mostly about that.

Firstly it was a northern extension of LGV-SE, which got TGVs 20km + closer to Gare de Lyon and therefore saved another 5 minutes or so on the trip to/from the South.

Also it was about providing high speed ‘inter city’ access to CDG and Euro Disney. It may even have been part of the deal to get Disney to Paris.
And most obviously you can't run a TGV through the centre of Paris - the original through TGV Lille-Lyon through the suburbs on one of the Ceintures took twice as long as today.

In any „normal“ country with a grasp of what the customers want, almost all services would run Barcelona/Valencia - Madrid Atocha - Sevilla/Malaga, which, while slower, would still have a very attractive journey time und would offer direct journeys each or every second hour, thus being vastly more attractive than one or two direct trains a day. Only then and depending on demand would the decision be made if additionally, a couple of trains that avoid Madrid would still be necessary.

Since (of course) there is no central train station in Paris, and Paris in itself can easily fill all trains that leave from there (meaning that a costly tunnel solution would have been useless, because most trains would not have had the capacity to take on through passengers anyway), a Paris avoiding line (with the major benefit of serving Charles de Gaulle airport) was really the only logical solution.

Mind, the often delayed plan to build an „Interconnexion Sud“ has come to nothing and it looks like traffic will remain on the Grande Ceinture. Maximum 2 TGV/hour/direction there of course could never fill a HSL, and SNCF have been reducing Paris-avoiding TGV services in the last years anyway.

To return to the Thread: In any case, Germany is not France and what might make sense in France will often not make sense in Germany.

Density matters- whilst France is heavily centralised, it's also (when it comes to regional centres) quite dispersed, so a high speed network with long runs between stations makes easy sense. Spain (with the longest high speed network in Europe) is similar- culturally & financially less focused on Madrid than France is on Paris, but the important cities are widely space so high speed makes a lot of sense. Germany, as noted, is very decentalised and is generally dense in population- you start trying to build a limited stop HSL network and there will be complaints from those not directly served.

For Brussels-Amsterdam, yes, tunnels under Antwerp & Rotterdam with High Speed stations (even) deep(er) under the Centraal stations would speed things up, but the cost would be hilarious. Den Haag is bypassed, but then it has very frequent IC, Sprinter and Metro services connecting to Rotterdam, and no shortage of IC to Amsterdam. Rotterdam-Schiphol section of HSL Zuid is only about 50km.

I don't think anyone would suggest avoiding cities on the current route, but rather by adding bypasses you can run additional faster services. That way no one loses out, you get a decent end to end journey time between major conurbations and greater utilization of existing infrastructure.

There's an element of history at play here. Recall that Germany was only reunified as one country in October 1990 and whilst the capital became Berlin at the same time the actual seat of government didn't move fully until 1999.

Back further - Germany as a country never existed until 1871, it was a slow coalescing of several smaller states. Not a unique situation.

And each Land had its own state railway build around its regional capital, be it Stuttgart, München ect.
Berlin was never as important ad Frankfurt or Hamburg ad it always had a rural hinterland.

But is the demand for through services sufficient to justify it?

For example, the Berlin-Hannover-Ruhr route is currently an hourly ICE service of 14 vehicles, splitting at Hamm to serve different parts of the Ruhr. Is there sufficient demand for (say) Berlin-Köln to run an extra service not calling at Hannover and Dortmund and other intermediate stations?

Even if there were (which is not the case, you could not fill these trains without Hannover and Dortmund),

1. building an avoiding line for 1 tph is pure waste of money;
2. the logical choice would be to have a half-hourly service, which is exactly what Deutschlandtakt is about (once you get to 4 tph, *then* you can go for a bypass).

Exactly - that's the point I was getting at.

I'm assuming the Deutschlandtakt is the reason why the ICE1 fleet is being retained for another 10 years?

Probably not the only one, but before COVID passenger numbers were growing strongly, as was the public and political expectation that DB would improve their services so as to shift traffic from road to rail for climate reasons. Let’s see how it goes after COVID.

I'm very surprised that there is only an hourly service connecting two of the largest German conurbations, including major cities en route..

Normal for Germany, they have always gone for hourly with very long trains. In fact, it is not unusual in Europe, even the Swiss have gone with hourly services for a long time before moving towards half-hourly some time ago. And don’t even start about the French;).

The UK model of sometimes extremely frequent, very often short trains, is rather an outlier. In most other countries, train capacity was increased before train intervals, since it was considered more efficient (see, again, the Swiss with their IC2000 stock). It is, of course much easier if you can go for 400m train sets, and double-deck if necessary.

The Deutschlandtakt, if it ever gets fully realized, sees half-hourly service on all major routes. And the Swiss will go for quarter-hourly, but only where there is no alternative because of passenger numbers. The required infrastructure improvements are simply too costly for any other way.

To add to Austriantrain's reply, Germany is much less centralised than the UK: suppose we had no London, and the capital was in the Central Belt of Scotland - what service would be required to Liverpool via Newcastle-West Yorks-Manchester (bear in mind that West Midlands is the business centre and Oxford-Reading is the high-tech centre, both at least as important as M62-Stadt)?

BTW Paris-Lyon is also hourly on a mere 2-hour run.

This is a good point and something of a mystery to me why the UK has gone down that particular route. Given the cost of infrastructure and shortage of drivers it was a strange decision for the UK train operators to go for frequency rather than increasing train lengths. But presumably there was some logic to it; train operators (e.g. Midland, XC, Transpennine) elected to increase frequencies rather than increase train lengths even before the DfT started micro-managing franchises from around 2004. Did they consider that increasing the frequency would increase demand?

If the Scottish central belt had the population of the Berlin conurbation and was centred on a single urban core rather than distributed over 50 miles, I would expect there to be maybe double or triple the current demand between the M62 belt and Scottish central belt. Also imagining that there were no major mountainous areas to cross (as is the case between the Ruhr and Berlin), new lines could be constructed relatively cheaply (or perhaps the original lines would have been straighter) to give a journey time that would beat the car and the plane, further increasing demand for rail services between the two.

The excellent book "The Regional Railways Story" gives a good summary of why frequency rather than length was preferred on the TransPennine route since the mid-1990s.

Essentially the existing trains between Liverpool and Newcastle were crowded and needed more capacity, but only really on the York-Manchester leg, so do you:

1. Attach / detach carriages for the busy bit
2. Attach / detach carriages for the whole journey
3. Add frequency via another, shorter distance service


1. Seems to make the most sense, but an operational headache and drain on capacity at a busy location like York, and
2. Involves wastefully running carriages round (incurring cost) where they are not really needed, so...

3. Makes most economic sense as you can use fewer units, over a shorter distance to target capacity where it is needed without any complications, and drive some revenue growth through the extra frequency provided.

Just a note. The Torre del Oro service does not go through Alicante, it runs on the classical València-Madrid line from València to Alcázar de San Juan (stopping at Xàtiva, Almansa, Albacete, and idk if Socuéllamos and Villarrobledo too), where it reverses into the Madrid-Sevilla classical mainline, which it serves all the way through to Córdoba. The Cordoba-Sevilla section was rerouted on the high speed line two months ago.

PD: it's my first post, and I'm Spanish :)

Choice Nr 3 is perfectly adequate if capacity is sufficient and if you are prepared to bear the staff costs. Once you need to build more infrastructure, it rapidly becomes the worst solution.

However, the differences in approach are quite easily explained by different infrastructure „givens“. Platform length and station capacity are usually much more limited in the UK than elsewhere. The Swiss even strengthen trains (or used to) at Zürich Main station during reversal! And they - and everyone else here - are much more tolerant on having full length trains on a whole service even if not needed everywhere. The consensus generally is that it is normally more economical than the alternatives.

I'd almost say Germany is probably one of the loosest federated states in the world, partly due to its young age and the reunification. As its been pointed out there isn't a single stand out main city for the whole country like a lot of others in Europe and everything is much more regional. Germans seem to belong to their state before they belong to Germany as a country, they are Bavarian before they are German for example.

Of course and thank you for correcting me. I didn’t follow UK railways then and was thinking more about length limits suchst Huddersfield which I often read about..... Still interesting that this decision was not made anywhere else, at least not to such an extreme.

The commercial incentive was to cut costs, while superficially improving the service.
BR was still in its downsizing mode and couldn't replace like for like.
It was the age of the Pacers too.
Regional Railways set its face against loco hauled stock, and InterCity was only interested in the prime routes.
RR did develop the Sprinter (class 156) concept (and Super Sprinter class 158s), and raised line speeds to match their performance (90mph for 158s).
Often these speeds were not available to heavy loco hauled trains, and still aren't.
