Why is an XC 170 on the Grantham-Nottingham??

I have just seen a CrossCountry 170/1 3 car unit come past on the Grantham-Nottingham line, heading west. Does anyone know why? It was today about 16:45. I know this is not normal, it's the first 170 we've had since EMT took over, they are the only operator past here :s
