Forgive me for hijacking the thread slightly, but why hasn't this station been renamed "University of Birmingham"? Not the most pressing issue I know, but the current name has always bothered me.
The station also serves the QE Hospital Campus so that would take some thinking about.

In what way? Because you think people might think that they're in Coleraine or Sunderland? Or because they will want to know what the University is?

We've had this conversation so many times. Why would someone know there's a station called University but not which University? In the same way that there are lots of Blake Streets in the county but only one of them has a station named after it.

If Canley has just been called University as well, for the University of Warwick, then I could see your point perhaps. But it isn't, it's called Canley.

I used to feel daft buying a ticket to University.

I tended to say "University Station, Birmingham".

What's wrong with the name?

There are quite a few universities in the UK, so potential for other 'university' stations which doesn't work if you don't have a location included in the name.

Like having a 'City' station... which city? 'Stadium' station... which stadium? 'Hospital' station... which hospital?

Like simply naming the first Parkway station.. 'Parkway' with no further detail.

It's almost comical that this didn't occur to anyone working at the railways when choosing the name.
