Does anyone know why the recycling bins on stations don't accept glass? You can put most things in them that you'd expect to be recyclable, such as cans, newspapers and plastic bottles, but the signs tell you to put glass bottles and other glass containers in the bin for non-recyclable waste.

I'd guess it all depends on the waste contract. Glass is heavy and difficult to compact. No idea how valuable it is.

Glass recycling isn't particularly resource (sand isn't exactly rare) or energy (you still have to heat it up to a gazillion degrees) efficient so I can understand why they'd rather focus on other stuff.

Glass manafacturing is made more energy and environmentally efficient by adding recycled glass or cullet which reduces the need for quite so much limestone, silica, soda ash and some other ingredients. Glass is infinitely recyclable.

Sure, but with limited bin space (or more likely collection ability) the case for recycling other stuff is far more compelling.

The case for accepting everything and sending it to be sorted for recycling is much more compelling.
