This is just going off a reddit post I saw complaining how Lizz Line stations are already apparently looking shabby and the material used was wrong.
I am thinking that modern stations are way bigger than older stations so tiles might simply be too expensive for an underground station.
I also don't agree that Lizz Line stations are grubby, though I don't use it often. My recent experience of using it, it actually looked cleaner than tube stations I use but I think the use of lighter colours just means that the dirt showed more at certain stations if you are someone who doesn't look for dirt at stations. I also appreciated how it was quieter than the tube. I wonder if tiles would make stations louder.
I don't know if tiles should or shouldn't be used, they can look premium, but I also think other materials for underground stations that don't rely on tiles are better at making the station not feel as deep as it is or more naturally brighter.
