why does driving different classes need special training?

Another aspect of route knowledge is that at certain locations some types of traction may have a lower speed restriction than the linespeed, which the driver has to remember. for example at Salisbury platforms 3 & 4 there is a restriction on 153s.
In other locations certain types of traction are not permitted, platform 2 at Bristol Temple Meads, used for stabling FGW units and sometimes locos (usually NR 31s). Until approx 5 years ago the only units permitted were 143s & 150s due to limited clearance, then coping stones on edge of platform trimmed back to allow 153s & 158s into platform.
