I have just been reading the Swansea Evening post newspaper and read the story about traders etc moaning how they cant park outside their houses since th swansea metro was started up.

Some other people are complaining how the route doesnt go to Mumbles, yet they were playing hell back in 2008 when the council suggested digging up only a small piece of land to allow the vehicles to turn around and yet when u try and reason with them they play hell.

I have had experience in other areas, such as when you are driving a step entrance bus and the buggy bridgade get on and complain because they got to fold their prams or when the buggies are taking up the wheelchair spaces and are asked to move because a disabled passenger wants to get on.

Has anyone else experienced similar problems, ie working on a preserved line where you get some people turning up and then complaining when a particular service doesnt operate etc

Because as a nation we excell at it.

To be honest, I think most local papers are the same.

Because the British people love only two things; moaning and queueing. And the only reason we love queueing is so that we can have a good moan about it; how long it is, how slow it's moving, and those foreigners who cut in front because they're rude, arrogant and don't know what a good bloody queue looks like!

If we didn't moan then we would take up the hobbies of other nations I mean for instance

French= drinking
American= eating
turkey= sleezey skirt chasing

At least moaning uses energy and makes us social.

Its a FTR and some of the the people complaining have 3 cars. They do complain when they park in a bad position and then they have to move their car because the bus cant get passed.

If a car is parked stupidly ie a few feet away from the pavement and i cant get passed easily i will beep my horn and wait a minute or 2 but then i will just go thorugh a take their mirror off if they dont move.

I have even seen a car driver get out of his car and play hell with the signalman at Llanelii when the barriers have gone down because he has been delayed for a few minutes

I have been on the recieving end many times when a car driver has been delayed at my crossing and let me tell you, its not very nice, its not particularly clever and is down right unacceptable!

I know what your saying, the Evening post newspaper has a video showing some idiots racing around the barriers on the 2 level crossings at either end of llanelli station.

From Monty Python's Flying Circus:

"I would like to interrupt to complain about people who keep interrupting things to complain about people complaining!!!"

The British love to complain, because its easier than actually doing anything about the problem.
Anybody who works in the service industry will be familiar with the customer who loves to complain, but then declines the offer of a refund, as he just wanted to make his point!

Bloody FTRs. They are so big and unnecessary - taking up the whole damned road. Bloody nuisance if you ask me. They are used in York. There isn't any room for them in York!!!! One of the MOST inappropriate places to use them.

What you are essentially saying Anthony is that you are deliberately causing damage to parked cars. Let me tell you something, if a bus driver ever damaged my car deliberately, I wouldn't be complaining. I would be moving swiftly to the local bus depot with a large, blunt instrument and a hell of a lot of seering rage.

As for complaining - you can't please all the people all the time. If you do something for one person, it will doubtless upset someone else. Moaning about it is just what we do, though I will concede it gets irritating when all you have in your ear is whinging.

I don't see what's so much better about them than just a normal bus. I think they're completely overrated.

And whoever it is can report what's happened and get you in a hell of a lot of trouble.

I dont actually take the mirrors off on purpose normally i wil try and squeeze the bus past the car and i have only clipped a mirror once which was luckily one of those that seems to flick back out with no damage.

There is one estate where we used to go which we threatend not to serve becasue of problems with cars including mums parking in bus stops to drop their kids off in school ( I know a few of these live only down the road) anyway after we threatened to withdraw the route in a local newspaper and at a local residents meeting a few residents complained to us that we would force them to walk a big distance to the nearest bus stop.

However as one of our amangers pointed out we wouldnt withdraw the service if they would tell people to park more consideractly and most of teh residents in teh estate seem to have taken note although u do still have the occasional problems, especially at the local tesco metro thanks to their big lorry who has to turn up at the same times the parents are bringing the kids to school and this regulary causes problems although i know our boss has got on the phone to the council to get something sorted out.

Not that bothered really. Small price to pay for the satisfaction I would feel. My car is a product of years of hard work and I would not just accept some bus driving tosspot wrecking it.

Well maybe you should always ensure it is parked adequately, in a driveway - not sure if you have them up north.

Allthough I don't know the area concerned I will say that not all places of residents have drive way parking. While obviously we should all try and park with consideration for others sometimes its a case of damned if you do damned if you don't.

Park half on the road half on the pavement and you will probably p*** off pedestrians, mums with huge american style pushchairs and run the risk of a ticket. Park on the road and you risk p***ing off Mr Bus or Lorry driver and risk having your car damaged in some way.

I agree that FTR is a stupid scheme - "fur coat and no knickers" from First - however

I believe that wingmirrors are classed as an "accessory" and as such aren't a reportable accident.

Of course, people will complain if the bus is taken off because of bad parking...

There's a road near me which is almost impossible to drive along in the day, on account of people parking there to cross the road to a business park where offices have insufficient parking spaces.

Now the council is dragging its heels on it - which is a right PITA. There are double yellows but nobody to enforce them, although - to be fair - they're usually not parked on. However, there are many bits of road that don't have them and this means there are no passing places for the buses and lorries. There's also a blind summit which is single carriageway from 8-5.30pm every weekday.

With a fire station nearby, I am sure that if a fire engine needed to get by, it would and to hell with the cars and their mirrors. The cars aren't parked illegally, but I am not sure who to blame - the council or motorists that don't seem aware of the fact that they are making the road near impossible to drive down.

Sadly, parking on a street isn't an automatic right. This is probably why so many front gardens are converted into off-road parking and, until people started to get concerned about reducing water levels from paved driveways, councils were actively encouraging it (they also get a fair whack for putting in a dropped kerb for access!).

And as for complaining, well I've moaned about it to the bus company and council but there's only so much time you can spend moaning before you give up. Big businesses are very good at palming you off for as long as possible to ensure that happens instead of them being made to do something. I wrote somewhere else recently that nowadays, the only way you'll get anything changed is when you can get it 'exposed' on Watchdog.

My car is always parked adequately. Have a look at my occupation and you will find out why.

And yes, driveways do exist in the North. We do not all live on Coronation Street. Some of us can even walk and breathe at the same time.......

Just so you know, I am not always at home and therefore, occasionally, I will park my car on main routes - such is the way of life. I have little sympathy for those who are parking poorly but, honestly, the general quality of parking in Leeds is very good and I find drivers are quite polite and well behaved. London on the other hand......

Tom B - I can confirm that any time a car comes into contact with another is classed as an accident. Failing to stop following such an incident is punishable by law. If it is done deliberately, there are also criminal damage implications.

JonMorris - you can't expose someone for not building a car park. The situation is clearly not ideal but there is no one to blame because, as you say, they are not parking illegally. Inconsiderately, perhaps. But the same thing happens here on Football days. The police have the power to restrict parking, but do not. It causes problems but there really isn't anything that can be done about it. Interestingly, many of the roads they park on are major bus routes. And so it comes full circle....

The Government set rules on the number of parking spaces you can build (or must build) and in recent years, it's been quite ridiculous. One per house and virtually none for visitors on a new estate.

I don't know what the formula is for an industrial area, but you can imagine that no business wants to waste money on putting in car parking spaces. If nobody is going to force them to build a suitable number, why should they?

Actually, they should be encouraging other forms of transport - and I think they do offer subsidised or even bus tickets to/from the train station. The parking situation would be significantly worse if they didn't already have some people leaving their cars at home.

About 10 years ago, a new industrial estate/ leisure park / residential area was being laid out by developers in Doncaster. The land was cheap as all hell. It would have been ideal to build in a railway station (since the line was nearby) and put a high-frequency bus from the area into town.

Did they? Nah, they got out the tarmac and put a few huge car-parks in, filled their public transport tickbox by sending a bus around the place every half hour, and then scratched their heads and wondered why everybody drove.
