Why do Advance fares decrease in price?

Be aware that some TOCs (looking at you LNER) remove cheaper advance ticket quotas from services with no notice so you can notice big increases in price even when nobody has purchased tickets.

Not sure if it is an algorithm or pricing managers are involved.

Pricing managers do not get involved in the availability of Advance fares on specific trains - that is a revenue management function. And it can sometimes be the case that group bookings will result in a jump in Advance fares as the reservations used will come from available quotas.

Oh mutha f. I have the worst luck. Bought the first leg for 20 and three hours later the full journey is available for 24.80 :'(
