* Limited to 60mph
* EWS suspicious of reliability / prejudiced against UK-built motive power / wanted to standardize ( mix to your owm content )

And nowadays they've probably sat there longer than they were used, and rotted.

Then why aren't they either scrapped, sold abroad, or retrofitted into a new class like the 47 into 57.

A good proportion of the fleet is still in use, they aren't all stored there, and stored is the operative work as although many won't see a return to service themselves there might be a good chance bit of them will as parts are used to keep the current fleets going. You can't do that if you scrap them, send them abroad or rebuild them, not that rebuilding would probably be worth it, it's a very expensive job, though a few years ago I bet nobody would have predicted the Class 69 fleet.

Because there’s enough other locos to scrap/sell/refit first. Especially when it ended up that EWS ordered too many 66s.

EWS sat on just about everything they owned & didn't use for years. Ask them why.

There's some rebuilt Super60s, don't know the details of that plan. And as the others said, not all of them are there.

Although the 60s were a lot more reliable than other legacy BR locos they are still not a patch on a 66 for reliability and maintenance costs.
There just aren't enough services requiring the haulage capacity of a 60. A 66 is just cheaper.

A 66 is not cheaper for fuel, though. The 60’s Mirrlees engine is significantly less thirsty than the EMD 710 engine in the 66s.

A fitter with experience of the 60s told me they were prone to engine faults, cylinder heads and diesel engine camshaft drives were their problems
