Why are some stations only partially barriered?

Thanks for that, what a delightful relic, looks exactly the same as when I was last down there.

It did when it was a public part of the station too, I didn't even know it was there for years and years until I discovered it was the easiest way to get somewhere you could smoke whilst waiting for a train.

I was somewhat surprised to find that the rear entrance/exit (Water St?) to [Liverpool]James Street is unbarriered.

Leicester car park entrance is barriered and remotely monitored from the main gateline, but due to misuse is now mostly closed except for peak hours.

Which is annoying as going out that way gave much quicker access to the Charles St area if one was sat at the rear of an arriving southbound train and using that entrance to return north has more than once me allowed to make a train which would have been missed if I had gone via the main entrance. What annoyed me most was that there was no notice advising of the closure as one would have saved me unecessarily going up the steps at the north end after I alighted the train.

As to other stations, there have been too many for me to remember but I think Worthing had only the main side barriered last time I was there.
