Why are Class 700s considered unpopular?

Do 717s have ATO capability for the TL Core? It's not a show stopper if they don't, but potentially something that might be an issue.

AIUI ATO fitment is not automatically included in ETCS fitment. Could be wrong though, maybe it's just a mode that's switched on. I knew they had the ETCS Capability as they required L2 signals-away capability for Moorgate.

Correct, no ATO on the 717s. The ATO on the 700s is a bespoke version (being the world first ATO carried by ETCS), and unlikely to be repeated as there is a proper ETCS ATO protocol now.

Does that mean that the Core ATO would not be compatible with standard ETCS protocols now?

Its a bit complicated, but ATO is all on the trains.
Ah, interesting. I thought it would have needed something extra on the track. Good to know that the non-standard nature of the ATO won't be a problem for a future fleet replacement/upgrade (if the 700s haven't been upgraded to the ETCS standard by then).

Many modern trains are boring and soleless nowadays, I agree Aventra units I also find extreamly dull, the Class 720 units on GA, and the SWR Class 701s are not exciting. Compared to the characterful charm of the Slam Door stock and Metropolitan A60 and A62 stock!
The 345's & 730's look cool. Also the S8 stock were a good replacement to the A stock which I'd love to see preserved.

The 700s are no longer getting the Egress panel perspex changed anymore (must have been costing a fortune with so many smashed every single day) and rather than change to the 717 design (metal cover) they've opted to put warning stickers on.

Next comes the new vinyls inside and outside the toilets to reduce the mess.
