I dont understand what they are or what they are for and furthermore i dont care!

Here here. In all honesty, when i first started seeing them on here, I started thinking everybody was losing the plot.
Was wondering what the world was becoming when people put barcodes as avatars. Now someone says they often change them. Oh heck, what is the world coming to?
Well, you lot keep enjoying your barcodes.
If anybody has anything interesting to say, or any interesting links, they will type it up in black and white, so people can see it.
As you seem to hide it behind fake barcodes, well what does that say?!

But isn't it then completely pointless? Wouldn't it be more productive, and less time consuming, to post 'a bit of fun' in the Queens English?!?

Some people are taking this far too seriously! It's a bit of fun for those with the facility to read the QR codes! It's not like we're talking about you all in secret!

If instead of using one of these barcodes on my avatar, I wrote something in an obscure foreign langauge, I would be considered a show off, non? Yet it would be just as incomprehensible at first glance to someone without the equipment to decode it.

Well, I was thinking more of being able to speak whatever language it was, but Google Translate would also provide a comedy rendering into English I suppose. Either way, it's the equivalent of having to have the right sort of phone and something of an inconvenience.

The real point is though, is it showing off? And if it is, then is having a 3D barcode as an avatar also showing off?

It is showing off so much as like excited children in the playground proudly showing off the latest toy or gadget man at work, (we've all go one!) most of whose new gadgets are totally pointless for his circumstances.

Basically it allows large quantities of data (is there a limit?) to be displayed under a small coded icon which is open to the masses to scan.

Two problems with this: first is those who don't have the facility or technology are instantly excluded. Second is, where there is pretty much unlimited display space, such as here, it is simply adding another layer of action (to scan) before you can read, so is then using technology for technologies sake.

I can 'get' the use in advertising providing you are advertising high tech upgrades to those likely to possess the technology, or where you have alternative provision of the info for those who don't have the facility. Otherwise you simply exclude huge swathes of customers, hardly wise in the current economic climate?!

Avatars are merely supposed to be a little identifier if we choose to use one. We all have a user page we can put lots of info and links to our pictures if we choose. As QR codes all look the same at first glance, using one as an avatar seems completely pointless to me? I have an iPhone, so am not a sulky technophobe!

Most barcodes are in addition to standard text, offering a quick way to 'send' a link without someone typing it in.

They're not supposed to be instead of! But it's only a bit of fun really.

Third, people who have forum avatars switched off (to avoid the more irritating ones) see nothing at all. 8-)

No need for sarcasm. I genuinely didn't understand who you were talking about.

I was NOT being sarcastic. This was a GENUINE apology, as I had made the mistake of clicking the wrong button when I sent the posting ... I should have pressed the "QUOTE" button on the right and I pressed the button on the left in error. I was trying to say that I have now been a member long enough to know the difference between these two buttons and there are those on this forum who feel that I am too pedantic for my own good.

Anyway, do you now accept my apology, based upon my clarification of the situation as shown above.?

Apology accepted :)
