Come on guys, be honest; Mojo started it, and now several others have copied him. Basically, why are so many different users' avatars of those phone barcode things? What do they all mean? How are we supposed to know without a capable phone? I for one am not spending £xxx on a Smart Phone just for that, so what is the point?

Sorry, I'm just being curious. As usual.

You're not missing out on much, most of them are text.

The idea is to make it easier to scan something and get a link to a product or service - appbrain has it

Mojo's is a link but every other one I've scanned has been used as a way of encoding plain text

They are often on adverts like on tubes, makes it easier than having to type in the url

Having finally succeeded in reading the answer, here it is:

"Why ever not Ivo? I see nothing wrong with them, in fact they are rather exciting and modern and new-fangled, and above all, pretty much no-one can read them.

So, yeah, there's your answer =)"

They'll work with most mobiles with a camera if you download a free app.

Some museums are experimenting with them in collaboration with Wikipedia.

Derby for instance is linking its Joseph Wright collection in this way.

On a train...somewhere!
I work at Waterstones and we now wear one on a lanyard so if we see people in store with a smart phone we can ask if they want to scan it and be taken to our mobile site!!

TBH, it's getting a bit irritating! Everyone's avatar looks the same to me now!

Now OxtedL has a green barcode. Some have stuck with the normal barcodes.

You know what, I'll bar this code once and for all!

I'll get my coat....
