I think their current journey planner is just a version of this, but a bit prettier?

Presumably this was designed for the text based browser Lynx. Amazing that it's still part of the software, or indeed that it existed in the first place. Perhaps back when DB itself had text-based terminals in their ticket offices, this was the easiest way to make journey planning functionality available?
Effectively a very, very old equivalent of today's websites which show a fancy interface in Google Chrome and a simpler one if you visit with an old version of Internet Explorer.

In Lynx itself it would look like this:
