I guess they both have their worst bits, on one hand you have commuters who if there are network disruptions, can get very abusive. On the other drunks who are generally abusive!

What about drunk commuters? Xmas session is approaching - I always aim to be on my train leaving Liverpool Street towards Southend by 8pm during December weeknights.

Day tripping families. Not only do they fill the train up, but they usually block the aisles with buggies and luggage as they have no consideration for their fellow travelers.

Commuters generally aren't abusive (in my experience of commuting anyway). They usually have a better idea of what to do in disruption too.

Surely every passenger is a good passenger as they all contribute to the railway's coffers? That is assuming of course that they have bought a ticket. And what’s wrong with getting merry at Christmas and catching the train home? Much more preferable to drink driving with all of its consequences!

There's absolutely nothing wrong with that at all. It's just annoying sharing a train home with people who cannot handle their booze, then proceed to make a nuisance of themselves.

Surely every passenger is a good passenger............

Only in an ideal world unfortunately. As in life there are good people and bad people (and a whole variable spectrum in between) there are also good and bad passengers.

If we add in alcohol to the equation then good passengers can turn into bad passengers very quickly.

Commuters have nothing better to do with their time than think of things to moan & groan about, whereas weekend travellers tend to be happy-go-lucky.

On the other hand those miserable commuters not only close slam door stock but shut the droplights too, whereas weekenders get off in a total dream (reguardless of announcement to please close doors behind them) & then meet & greet their loved ones who also pay no attention whatsoever to the open door & delay it is causing <(

Its the Weekend Travellers for me, The commuters are well behaved compared to the weekend lot, ive noticed since the Olympics especially the weekends are getting much busier mostly on the sundays.

City of London commuters who have had too much to drink (and there'll be a lot of that in a month's time as Christmas approaches). Sloshed out their skulls with alcohol but they still think they're above the law.

In all fairnes we are paying a small fortune for our season tickets and are all too often treated like cattle!

Our Senior Conductors have the patience of saints with some of these plonkers on a Friday night. They then have revenge on a monday morning by letting them know how much quieter they are now than last time they where seen. Pay-back ;)

Its the families that block the aisle with luggage, prams general crap then get abusive when you ask them to move it or try to move it! Also what gets on my wick is those that get on a station on a single track which is a few stops form the terminus and get on, take loads of seats up, then stay on at the terminus because they are going the other way, why can't they just wait for the train to come back the way they are going, why take up seats they aren't entitled to? used to get that a lot when I used to travel to Blackpool south fortnightly, gets on my Bloody nerves, I've seen people do it at Kirkham and Wesham before, now that's laziness!!

Commuters for me, without a doubt. Especially London-bound trains. If I could, I would actually ban them from trains. They sit at tables, spread all their paperwork everywhere, hog seats with their jackets, constantly scream down the phone and generally think they're God's gift and think that everything revolves around them. Thankfully there's people like me who tell them straight! ;)

I've never had a problem with weekend travellers. They're always friendly and you can strike up a genuinely nice conversation with them!

The guard is entitled to charge them for the extra distance. They could be 'track bashers' also ;) Have you never stayed on a train at the terminus?

Heck, I've been tempted to do that on double-track routes in the winter when it's cold and wet - and there's little or no shelter on the platform.

But surely this is something to celebrate? It can only be a good thing that customers used the train during the Olympics, were pleasantly surprised with the overall experience and are choosing to use the train again. In my opinion this can only be good thing for the rail industry and its employees.

Well it's public transport so the public have to be allowed on. The day trippers are a bit of a nuisance at the ticket window asking questions and haven't got a clue at the TVM and sometimes you miss the train. But hey ho, what can you do?

I would say commuters are worse. Drunks are normally just having a good time and many are just too drunk to make a fuss. Commuters are, as soon a they walk in to the station, numb to all hummanity and decency. :)

It would help matters if we were treated like humans, as oppposed to cattle!

Interesting comments. On on hand both some commuters and drunks can get abusive but drunks could are more dangerous to their own safety.

Commuters are the best passengers by quite a way, in my opinion. They know which train they want and where to stand, they might not be that clued up on alternatives, but I'd rather deal with 100 commuters than 100 day trippers, who have (more often) have no concept of which train to catch, or where to stand - usually they all bunch together using one or two doors.

Without a doubt the hands down winners/losers? are Cheltenham Race goers on Gold Cup week..Hooray Henrys and Henriettas drinking champers all day and acting like juveniles by the end of it.I know a few staff who move their leave purposefully just to take that week off!

From the financial point of view it could be argued that commuters are the worst as they generally pay half fare by means of a season ticket but travel at peak times.

As regards behaviour, weekend revellers are often the worst, young singles often get drunk and abusive, and families with young children tend to occupy about twice as many seats as paid for.

One of the reasons for paying the first class fare is not only to get a larger seat, but also the hope or expectation that first class will be free of drunks, dogs, screaming infants, babby cariages, rucksacks and so on.
On weekday trains, my expectations are usually met and the first class fare justified.

On services that offer weekend first, it resembles steerage but with larger seats. For this reason I avoid weekend trravel as far as possible.
And no Pullman restaurant is available at weekends either.

Commuters are generally alright although they get difficult when something goes wrong and all they come out with "Do you know how much i pay for this service ?", thinking they rule the roost and should be treated as royalty.

Day-trippers/tourists are worse though, they arent used to how the railway works - of course down here, throw in trains that have sections for different destinations - it can be all fun and games with them !!
