We were around Woodhouse ( Junction ) nr Sheffield a few days ago and saw this sign that had been took down. what does it mean and what was it used for please ?

To warn of Spring points or catch points. A set of points designed to derail a runaway train. This an older version of the sign but it's a good example of the points.
