White Rose Leeds

On my travels today and I'm wondering why White Rose Shopping Centre in Leeds doesn't have a station. Is it just me that's a bit baffled?

Because it is a stones throw from Cottingley and Morley. It would mean either closing one of those two or lengthening the journey time between Leeds and Dewsbury.

It’s getting one on the TPE line. Personally I think it would make more sense on the less congested Wakefield line.

It’s just over the dual-carriage way. You can see it from the sainsburys. No different to how Meadowhall and it’s station are positioned.

Considering the capacity constraints on the transpennine core and the already delay-prone timetable, putting a station on the ECML spur would make a lot more sense.

A station on the Huddersfield or Wakefield lines would serve little purpose. People using the train to get there would only ever be a few minutes away from Leeds itself, so would be far more likely to go there instead.

I agree. I think it will turn the White Rose Centre into a huge Park & Ride facility. Maybe they're happy with that?

That is one of the possible uses for a station in the White Rose area but the drivers in that area currently won’t make it a first choice considering that Elland Road is located near the M621. How well it is used will depend on the station design and how it connects with nearby amenities.

Don’t forget that there is a reasonable housing density to the east of WRC and journey times are not brilliant on buses.

This has got me thinking that there could be a station at Elland Road on the Wakefield line. It would serve the football stadium, & the site is already a park & ride.

The Elland Road Park and Ride runs every 8 minutes at peak times. The bus might not be the quickest way of getting around, but a station at White Rose would only get 1 or 2tph, so personally I'd always choose the bus if driving any significant distance. What shops does White Rose have that Leeds doesn't anyway?

White Rose was quite unique in 1997, fast forward 20 years and the choice of shopping 'centres' in and around West Yorkshire is now fairly substantial!

Most people I know either stick to Leeds (especially now with Trinity) or head to Meadowhell!

As a Leodisian, the WR offers two thing that town can’t: firstly, everything that’s there is within a 5 minute walk, but more importantly FREE, level car parking. Parking in Leeds is utterly ridiculous and so expensive. The ramps between floors in the Trinity NCP are so steep that many normal cars scrape their bumpers on the floor as they come down.

I see a lot of the hired buses that shuttle people out from the centre and they are rarely busy let alone packed. Would the commuter traffic tip the scales for a business case, quite honestly I doubt it.

Most of Leeds can be walked across in 10 minutes (I work close to the bus station and I can, traffic permitted be from desk to platform in 15). Admittedly it is not all indoors, but there is still far more in the centre which would negate the need to have a station at White Rose to attract them there instead. As you say, WR has the free parking that attracts people who don't want to use a train or bus, but again don't add weight to a business case.

Does that mean that Cottingley station will be closed as planned?
In addition it also comes in line with the transpennine upgrade/electrification meaning that between Dewsbury and Leeds, tracks will remain double rather than quadrupled
