Websites like Trainline show you when the cheap singles are, but don't seem any good for trying to find cheap same-day return tickets
Advance tickets (i.e. the cheap singles) can't be sold as returns. Return tickets, with a few exceptions, are always going to be flexible and therefore often more expensive than buying two advance singles from Trainline or the forum's ticketing site.
It all depends on how much you value flexibility over cost. But return tickets can't fluctuate in price like advance singles can.
At most, if you use a split ticketing site, you may get a decent saving by splitting a journey with multiple flexible return tickets.

This forum website has a good ticketing platform - https://tickets.railforums.co.uk/

It will only take a cut of any split tickets it finds, whereas Trainline will usually charge a booking fee whether it's a through ticket or a split ticket (unless you book using the mobile app on the same day of travel I believe).

Advance fares don't come as returns though. For some journeys a Return ticket will be cheaper than Advances, on others two Advances will be cheaper than a Return.

@Anetos. How much are you happy to pay for your cheap same-day return? From Batley, £9.60 gets you to/from Ilkley. £13.50 gets you to/from Skipton. £14.80 gets you to/from Harrogate or Knaresborough. £15.80 gets you to/from Sheffield. £23.80 gets you to/from Ribblehead. And it's £31.20 for a South Pennines Day Ranger. Could get to Manchester & back the same day with that, using completely different routes on the outward and return legs.
