Oh yes, SWT used to run a Reading-Winchester-Fareham-Barnham-Worthing-Brighton with 170s, didn't they?

I don't know where they got the 170s from though...

By changing 4 car 170 diagrams to 2 car 170 diagrams.

I would get rid of first class on ALL trains. Everybody should be treated as equal in my opinion

So British Leyland bus bench seats and bouncing trains for the South East as well then?

Eight 170s came from SWT at the end of 2006 start of 2007 and they also got one more from Central Trains later in 2007. The units (at least the SWT at any rate) actually had first class at both cab ends but it was removed from one of the ends, this is why there is a compartment separated by doors from the rest of the train but is actually standard class (and has been refitted with 2+2 as well).

That compartment is fantastic, the standard class seats still have the first class legroom (the table seats at least) and because it's still separated by a door people avoid it because they still think it's first class, so quite often you can get your own private compartment :D

I did that on an ex-MML 170 running a CT route once - thought declassified FC was FC.

Yeah the 2 170's on south TPE really shouldnt be there. Although i do like an occcasional ride on a 170 it really does seem pointless. I presume its a lack of 185's that has caused this?

Windermere gets a 185 all day, whilst journeys like Sheffield - Manchester are a two car 170... don;t you love it?

Yup, I remember using that when the 170s were new. In fact, I just mentioned that service in the "XC" thread (as an example of the kind of "longer distance" routes that TOCs used to offer, despite being outside their "core" area)

True, but Sheffield - Manchester is also 6/8 carriages per hour depending on EMT strengthening.

Some hours it can be a two coach EMT 158 and a two coach TPE 170 (plus a Pacer that leaves a few seconds after one service and arrives a few seconds before the next one, so is little use for end to end journeys).

exactly. it can be 7 car but can be 4 car. completely agree. I cant wait for all EMT trains to be 4 car that will make the situation alot better.
