I can add Charleroi to my list. What a unique system that is! Never quite seen anything like it. It feels a bit bizarre travelling around on 2-car 80s trams which feel too small for some of the crumbling infrastructure there. I also had a look around the ‘ghost line’, which was completed but then never used. It appears in the last year stations such as Chet have been demolished in preparation for rebuild, as it looks like this line will finally be completed and actually used in the next few years.
The amount of, erm, characters around meant I really didn’t feel comfortable taking many photos!

One thing I really appreciated was the M1/M2 line to Anderlues, which has kept some of the features of the Vicinal tramways, such as the bi-directional single track running in semi-rural areas. This is surely the only section left in Belgium that feels like the true rural Vicinals. Obviously there is the Kusttram but I’m not sure that has many of the rural features as the Anderlues branch.

I also discovered that the trams stop running around 7pm! That seems exceptionally early for a European tramway. It is replaced by buses in the evenings, up until about 10.30pm. Presumably this is a cost-cutting exercise.

How many vicinal tramways remain in Belgium? I would think only the Kusttram and the tourist tramway leading to Les Grottes de Hahn caves in Wallonia.

The branch to Anderlues also is still in operation, as part of the Charleroi “Metro”. Arguably this is the most authentic piece of former Vicinal network running, as it includes rural sections, and single-running along the road. The Kusttram is clearly the best part of the former Vicinals, but the Anderlues line has many features of the lesser-used rural Vicinals. It continued all the way to La Louviere until 1993 - if it lasted until the late 90s, it might not have been withdrawn at all seeing as there was a bit more of a tramway revival in Western Europe then.

There’s some very atmospheric videos on YouTube of the Charleroi-area Vicinals as many of those lasted until the 1980s, when obviously personal camera equipment was easier to obtain and use. If only I was able to see them for myself back then!

I suspect those ''characters'' may be the reason for no evening service.

Sorry for digging up an old post to have a moan, but it's really frustrating when transport advocates start splitting hairs about what to call a system. Most of the terms are not clearly defined and what a system gets called is often down to whatever name a particular politician in the city thought sounded fancy at the time the system was developed. Hence we get silly names like Nottingham Express Transit, Midland Metro and Sheffield Supertram because just calling a tram a tram isn't glamorous enough!
Dortmund is a tram system as it uses tram-style vehicles and runs on embedded rails which are accessible to the public; and among road traffic. What the management prefer to call it is neither here nor there- if it looks like a tram and operates like a tram, then it's a tram.

Anyway, ranting aside as of last weekend I can add the Bridgnorth funicular to my list. Though only the track on the right hand side if you're facing it at the bottom, and only in the uphill direction.

I've not read much about light rail in Spain but they have evidently opened several systems, including one on Tenerife, since the 1990s, with more under construction. Anyone know how successful they have been? Once again the UK is seen as lagging behind progress in mainland Europe.

I recently had a trip on the LEB (Lausanne - Echallens - Bercher) in Switzerland but this is a roadside light railway, originally steam-operated, rather than a tramway, although it uses tram-like vehicles.

Wikipedia pages often include daily users, although not always up to date. Tenerife is given as 50,000 users per day, which sounds like a success. The only Spanish tram I have been on was the one in Bilbao and that was very busy every time we used it
