Which stations are most in need of work?

I did a thread on trains most in need of refurbishment/replacement not so long ago, so we might as well have one for stations to.

Put it simply, which stations do you think are most in need of work, refurbishment or in cases of extremity, demolition!

If I could, I would like to see Letchworth get the two island platforms originally planned, making it a four platform station. This never actually happened, but it was proposed.

What doesn't need work in Yorkshire and Humber?

Here are two.

Wakefield Kirkgate. Needs a ruthless PTFE over all roof over the centre roads and platforms. Steel can enscapsulate the existing listed retaining wall, preserving the station to existing standards and protecting it. Barriers, businesses and an improved environment should create a fantastic base for trains and passengers.

Castleford. Needs some form of bunker busting weapon but a sensible upgrade to facilities should be possible within a reasonable budget.

Wigan North Western - The car park and bus stops outside have had more money thrown at it than the station proper has since at least the 80's

Wakefield Kirkgate, Crewe, Manchester Victoria.

Wakefield Kirkgate has a lot of potential, but they'd need to do a St Pancras style refurb of the station building, barriers, a better PIS (the current one just doesn't work) and better waiting areas.

Droitwich Spa needs a far bigger car park, the current one is pathetic and causes congestion in the mornings. While we're at it, I would like the main station building rebuilt (like Moor St.) into the pre-1960s GWR style, with canopies (it would look very nice with the semaphores).

Another vote for Kirkgate here. It's a shame really as it has a lot of potential but just sits there rotting away...

Although it strikes me as weird that the Robin Hood Line and Staffordshire Moorlands line have comprehensive PIS systems yet Alfreton (and Langley Mill) do not, despite receiving a limited InterCity service!!

Shrewsbury, although not a complete disaster, could do with some work - the main platform toilets should be completely overhauled for starters.

There were plans only a couple of years ago to re-do the entrance area (ticketing hall) but nothing seems to have happened. Any update on this?

Whilst obviously not on the same scale as Kirkgate, Exeter Central is starting to look very dilapidated now, and whilst I know there's an imminent refurb of the ticket office coming, I don't think that the platforms or the footbridge are getting touched, which is where the work is needed most.

Where to start though, the problem lies with the TOCs and Network Rail as the TOCs will only paint to head height and Network Rail isn't interested in anything above head height.

It's a shame as any station could look quite nice with some TLC...

Interesting point raised by Class172 concerning car parks. Many of them are either too small or desperately in need of a resurface. The park at Letchworth is small, the charges for use are extortionate and at rush hour time getting out of it can be a real crush with all the taxis waiting for their customers.

Wolverton has been in desperate need of a ticket office for years. Thankfully work is now underway.

I really wish more pride was taken in the appearance of Birmingham International. It's looking very tired these days, which is a shame. Likewise with stations on the Cross City line such as King's Norton.

Except Lostock Gralam; Lostock Gralam needs to be demolished.

The Station buildings at Lostock Gralam were demolished a couple of years ago, not much left to demolish now (except a new waiting shelter, which has already been vandalised)

Hattersley needs a giant bomb put under it (not just the station either) horrible place, I feel sorry for the majority of residents there

It's being upgraded! Just got a refurbished ticket hall on the London side (Platform 1) and doing work on the ex Redstar(Is it Redstar? Something like that) postal building and meant to be getting a huge new concouse/ticket office on the Country side (Platform 4).

The toilets are rank though!

It's about time something was done with the low-level platforms at Retford. GNER did a great job doing up the waiting rooms and toilets on the ECML platforms, but the prefab concrete of the low level was left alone. Nothing major needed, but some doors for the substantial shelters, along with improved lighting, better seating and improved CIS (to match the rest of the station) wouldn't go amiss.

Going one station along the line, Gainsborough Lea Road could really use a coat of paint, some CIS screens (to go with inaudible announcements), a help point and maybe even a TVM or two. Get rid of the burnt out signal box too, would make things a bit more welcoming.

Oh, and Wakefield Kirkgate... don't get me started

We had a similar thread before and nothing posted there or here makes me change my vote from Wakefield Kirkgate.

Take the wooden platform canopy near the entrance. This is full of holes and cracks. Rather than repair the roof, they have secured netting underneath to stop pieces of wood falling on unsuspecting heads. Of course, as soon as the rain starts, those same heads get soaked

Plenty of other issues elsewhere on the station which would be an absolute disgrace on a little used branch line, but here alongside the hourly local services to Leeds, Sheffield, Knottingley, Huddersfield and beyond there are hourly express services to Sheffield and Nottingham and direct services to London.

Whilst I'd like to advocate something local I'm going to have to say Manchester Victoria for being most badly in need of refurbishment.

Further south I'd nominate Northampton for its vastly inadaquate building, platform count and car parking.

Crewe im afraid, i go past it everyday and feel sad and angry,weeds growing from roofs,permament speed restrictions due to state of roof,disused muchly needed bay platforms,although the front is ok and shops ok,rather than give it a lick of cheap gloss do something about the decaying eyesore of a roof

Wakefiled Kirgate does, however when I first went it was not as bad as I thought it would be. It would be good if they did refurbish it to keep the large station buildings. They could have somekind of railway exhibitionn in their, maybe a model railway or something. They could also have a wating room and things in their.

I have never quite "got" WGN. It is a mainline station which looks like abandoned halt at the end of a coastal branch line. The subway is dank, the waiting rooms are seriously outdated...Its layout seems counter intuitive...Needs a lot of work
